putting together an off-road intake

I have read about all the upgrades to the fuel system; electric pump, return line, regulator, etc.; and I plan to use it all. My question is, for a stock 350, in a cj5, what should I top it off with, besides fuel injection (maybe later),and that will not cost over $500 for intake and carb. 2 or 4 barrel holley, edlebrock, etc......single or dual plane intake???? models or features to look for. I want to accomplish: good idle, good torque at a lower rpm, and good off-camper running. I know nothing compares to the ease fuel injection, but the price still turns me off.

Thanks
Dale

IMO, if you want a good low RPM motor, use a dualplane manifold, a 4 barrel carb of appx. 600cfm with vacuum secondaries. I'd
personally use the Quadratech (spelling) carb because it works better on off camber than Holley. The reason for the 4 barrel, at low
RPM's you'll be running off the small primaries only, which flow less cfm than a 2 barrel of acceptable size for a 350V8.

I'm in agreement. You don't ever, ever want to use a single-plane manifold on a stock motor. Especially if you want any low-end (or want it to run for that matter). The carb to look for is actually called a Quadrajet. You can buy an original Rochester or Edelbrock makes one now. Best off-camber carb made.

Thanks, that is the exact info I need to start to gather some parts together.

Quadrajet for the carb, stock GM or Edelbrock Performer for the intake (make sure you get a carb/intake combo that match. Stock Q-jets won't fit many aftermarket intakes w/o an adapter).

Sorry about the carb name. Must have been a brain [email protected]

I like the wiend(spelling) action plus dual plane intake and quadrajet setup, it is very affordable(intake is $90 from summit) and works well with a stock motor.

i prefer for an engine not intended for high rpm trail use to use a dualplane intake and a 2bbl holley. yes the 4bbl will have a little better signal at the boosters, but you have twice as much fuel in the bowl to handle the additional boosters. the holley just needs a spring loaded needle assy, and a vent whistle, both will set you back very few $$ and a few minutes time. the holley is easy to tune, inexpensive, and very reliable.

Good things come to those who do research!!
*ddtoby* Asked,

WHY? With a stock 350, there is no point the return valve or return line as long as you keep heat away from the fuel lines.
Return lines and valves in carbureted cars are mostly for heat control, or for fuel pumps that don't have a bypass valve. If you get a Holley blue pump, you don't need the return.

For a stock 350, I'm not sure the electric fuel pump would even be needed...
There are a lot of high volume mechanical pumps out there for half of the price of an electric fuel pump, and will delver more than adequate volume and pressure...
(Look into a mechanical fuel pump for a 70 LT-1 350 Corvette, the flow rates are plenty, and the pump is cheap, and available at any auto parts store.)

A fuel pressure regulator and gauge are always good ideas.
Mount the gauge outside of the cockpit, so if the line leaks, it's not in the Jeep with you!

The factory stock chevy aluminum dual plane for a 4 bbl will be the cheapest, and give you the best bottom end power and drivability.
The Edelbrock Performer would probably be my next choice, then the Edelbrock Performer RPM, and so on.
Edelbrock trades a little bottom end for more midrange power and wider power bands.
Most aftermarket intakes kill bottom end to make top end power.

*......single or dual plane intake????*

If you use a single plane intake, expect a decrease in vacuum, a big drop in low end power, a drop in fuel milage, and drivability problems.
Single plane intakes usually don't start to really work until the RPM reaches around 3,000.
Most driving is done well below that.

It pays for it's self pretty quick when gas is $1.50 Gal., and up, and expected to reach $2.00 Gal. by summer,....
(I'm breaking out the old Harley pretty soon... OPEC can kiss my A$$ at 50 to 60 MPG... and I look cool doing it!)
