Just thought I'd share a few pics. A friend sunk his YJ in the woods behind his house, and I got to pull him out

He fell into bull-dozer tracks, which ate 31" tires pretty quick

That's not how it looks to me

I see it as the YJ trying to pull your bug eyed(read: scared

) CJ into the mud, but it doesn't seem to want to play.

My vision could be off a little though, but that's what I see

Im with the YJ guys. Looks like the little red jeep couldn't convince the yellow one to play??

But seriously, looks like a good rescue. I bet your friend wishes he had a Hi-lift. That would have had him out of there in no time. Nothing like helping out a fellow Jeeper.

The hook on the winch cable was hooked on the base of the ball. I realize that's not the best way to do it, but is it really that bad? Isn't the ball rated to pull something much heavier than a Jeep?
This actually only the second time I've used the winch (installed it last month) so if I'm doing it wrong, please educate me.

I did have a blanket on the middle of the cable, it's just not visible in those pics.

Most balls are max out at 7000lbs unless you have those really expensive ones. The winch will put way more strain on it.

I'm not sure of the dynamics, but I've seen what can happen when they let go. I've never seen a winch break one, but I have seen what a tow strap will do to a ball -- launched into orbit!

Oh, there is something about the orientation of the hook. I think that you are supposed to put the hook open side up so that if it breaks, it fly down instead of up.
