Will it hurt anything if you just take off the pump and leave the metal shaft thing to spin?

How could it leak oil? That would mean when the pump is on trans. oil would mix with 2 stroke oil.

If your talking about just unscrewing and removing the pump, but leave the exposed shaft to spin, it will leak tranny oil. There is no seal around the shaft, so the tranny oil will leak out past the shaft. The pump makes the seal.

Because the shaft is higher then the oil level, it's not going to drain or flow out. But it will leak, and worse yet, water can get in.
