Power steering cooler needed?

Not much in the archieves so I'll ask:

Has anybody found a real need for a power steering cooler on their toy based PS setup? I'm planning on using a FJ60 box with a toy truck pump turning 35"x12.5" tires on the zuk.

I had virtually the same setrup on another truck (albeit much heavier) and it seemed to puke fluid when it was hot and working hard with the tires aired down. Was this due to overheating and would a cooler have fixed this?

Mine is a kick conversion, but I found out I needed one on a run in the middle of BFE. Started pukeing big time, as luck would have I had extra PSF (a budy had been having problems with his XJ). If you are in doubt put one one.
I have not had a problem since.

yes it will help. It is on the list for WW3 Mine hasn't puked yet but it has been running hot. on my sami I was running toy gear and I used the smaller Trans cooler from autozone.
worked great. was like 24.00 I think. I will be going with that one again.

Is the cooler a good idea even with smaller tires and the kick setup? I only run 235s now and for $24 it would be wort not having to wonder about it. Thanks. Jim

It can only help. Even a 30-40 degree drop in temp can extend the life of fluid and seals, and we know how the kick p/s gears like to eat pitman shaft seals.

I am going to a toy p/s setup and will for sure have a cooler on it.

I have one on mine and I'm using the Toy setup and it helps out a lot. I'm turning 33" boggers and the fluid gets pretty hot after a day of wheelin.

For the cost it could extend the life of the box/pump I think it is worth it.
If I ever get the replacement seals I ordered when I have the box apart I will be installing a cooler.
(Of course I suppose you could say I "Abuse" mine.

A cooler is cheap insurance. I used a small tranny cooler which was about twice the size of the available PS coolers. For under $30 I think it was well worth it......

I use a duel cooler power steering and oil cooler from summit I have it between an a/c fan I bought and the radiator. Then I have my flex-0-lite electric fan in place of the engine clutch fan. ( oh ya ). I still have room.

What did you guys use for hose to run to and from the cooler? I had a helluva time with hose when I was putting in my P/S and just used the hoses that came with it. There was some difference of opinion on what to use with trans hose or P/S hose. Thanks. Jim

Jim, If I remember correctly, I used 3/8" PS hose from NAPA to run to the cooler.....
