I need to replace my power steering box on my '85 CJ. What i was wondering was is this something
I could do in my driveway without too trouble? Are there any special tools I would need or anything
special I should know about? I am also going to replace the lower steering shaft. Thanks in advance.

An impact wrench and a six pack would be nice but not mandatory. At least not the impact wrench anyway.

Can you fix it?
I got a welder and a grinder. Heck yeah I can fix it./wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

A pitman arm puller would also be handy.

heres some advice.. take two days.. put that puller on.. real tight.. hit it acouple of times and tighten some more.. then get that six pack.. and start having some fun.. after each beer.. smack it some more.. and tighten.. get another beer.. do this till you run out of beer.. then the next day.. come out and it should just pop right off.. switching out the steering box is the easy part.. those pump lines might be metric in size... think mine were.. but i bought those new.. good luck

Jeepgod,
I thought that was the required technique to be used for all Jeep repairs and modifications. I spilled my last beer while changing a flat on a trail run this last Sunday, and I think that lost beer hit me the hardest,of all of the trail carnage. Jeepckick said its not that bad theres still sodas left, "AHHHHH", it brought tears to my eyes.

Yeah, watch those power steering lines... they are metric (18mm/19mm?), and aluminum nuts too - so use a crow foot wrench but don't be surprised if you round them off anyways. Oh and yeah they are right about getting the pitman arm apart. Also, be careful to support the box and axle/spring packs if you are taking the steering box bracket off the frame because all that stuff is heavy and wants to move a lot when you loosen those 3 frame bolts. I suggest jacking the Jeep by the frame from the front driver side so that the leaf springs and bushing mounts stay in place when you loosen those bolts for the bracket.

There are 2 male (E14)TORX bolts inside the bracket to the top 2 bolt holes in the gearbox that you will need a female TORX socket for. Some rental shops have pitman arm pullers for rent.

I took mine off and took it to my local repair shop and they charged me $10 or $15 to take off the pitman arm and the torx bolts that held the bracket on. I replaced the torx bolts with regular bolts. Yeh, watch those power steering lines. Make sure you start them in straight and not cross threaded.
