Not sure about the steering.

I put a bestop high back seat in my CJ. All that was involved was drilling into the stock seat mounts to correctly fit the holes already in the bottom of the seat. It fit right in and it's a nice seat as far as I'm concerned.

I'd say to scrap the steering and put in a newer steering box and column. They make kits for the saginaw conversion. Advance adapters has one - it seems a little high though. This will improve your steering a lot. Hope this helps.

One word of caution on seats. I used to have a 70 CJ5, same tub dimensions as your 57, and I found that all the highback seats I tried
had a thicker back than the stock type seats. This pushed the seats to close to the steering wheel because the seat back hit the rear
fenderwell. One early CJ that I saw had notched the rear fenderwell to solve this.
