Can any of you guy's who put the pony carbs on tell me how you adjusted the idle and if there is a Mixture screw on these things ?? I got it on and it fired right up but can not adjust the idle worth a s*&t. Also where does that wire go ?? I went buy that write up that is on the net and they matched it up to a celinoid on the old carb -- but my old carb's celinoid that looks like what I need has "Two" wires coming from it ?? Any help would be great ---- Thanks Mac0

Ill take a look at mine tomorrow as far as the solenoid "color code" thing goes and post back.As far as the idle screw and mixture goes, dont even worry about that until you have that wire hooked up correctly, otherwise it'll never run right. But anyway, the idle screw is on the accelerator cam and the air/fuel mixture screw is just to the left of that on the side of the carb, you cant really miss it.After you make sure of your wiring, turn the mixture screw clockwise until its tight, then counter-clockwise appr. 3 1/2 times. That'll get you very close to where you want it.

Thanks for the replies here guy's.
I got the wire on the carb and have 12v going to it. It still will not idle down and the idle screw on the linkage is all the way out. I found the idle/air mixture screw and have read all the back 'search' items. I have adjusted that all the way in and all the way out till it fell in my hand ? Sometimes the idle would change and sometimes not ?? I plew it out with the air compressor. I left it at 3 1/2 turns out but the thing still is at about 1500rpm or so on the idle and will not turn off with the key - you have to drop it in gear .. Do I need to rip it apart again to clean it some more ?? It also smells real rich from the exhaust. And I checked the float window and it is right above the little dot in the middle.

And another thing --- what is with this frigging 'carb iceing' ???? The stock carb would ice up every morning -- I would have to pull off the road and turn it off for one minute and then it is just fine. Well it happened again with the pony carb this morning !!!!!! I can't believe these things can be that tempermental ....

Thanks again for the help ----- Mac0

What about the throttle cable adjustment? At idle it should have visible slack so you're sure the plates are closing all the way. (ask me how I know this...)

DId you do a rebuild on the carb or just blow it out...I swapped on a freshly rebuilt Toy carb and had to take it off and re-clean it 2 times to get all the grundgy flaky stuff out of the jets, especially the idle needle.

Does the phenolic spacer/gasket have to be a certain way with the pony? Again not sure about the pony but the stocker and toy need vacuum on ports on the bottom plate and won't idle at all if those ports are blocked off. (ask me how I know #2....)

The wire most likely goes to a gas shut-off solenoid, you should be able to hear it click on/off when you hit the key...if not it's either not working or not hot.

There's not much to these old carbs...if they're clean and the few moving parts are OK they pretty much have to spit gas

Carb icing....check your fuel filter back by the tank for water, it can freeze enough to restrict flow to the carb, even freeze off gas flow completely. (ask me how I know #3.....)

Throttle cable has play in it .
I didn't do a rebuild can't seem to fined a kit. But I thought I cleaned it good before I put it on.
The phenolic spacer I'm not sure if it has to be a certain way but I did match it to the manifold and carb with a Drumel tool.
I will have to check for a clicking noise on that solenoid.
I think I need to rip it apart even more and clean the s*&t out of it again.

Carb icing -- I will check the fuel filter but I don't think it is that. It isn't that cold out here. If I remember right from my flying day's - carb ice develops in the carb when the gas/air mix goes though the ventures. Thats why when I shut it down for a minute it melts and then starts again. Touchy little Asian this thing is !!

Thanks for the help ---- Mac0

If it won't idle down make sure the float needle is working properly and not pressurizing the bowl . Also, verify the throttle plates are closed and one isn't loose or something weird . Test the fuel shutoff solenoid , they are pretty universal and if I remember correctly share the same type as some of the US made Escorts . Carb icing is from cold damp air freezing within the venturi's , or water mixed into the fuel becoming frozen the same way . A warm air box or heated air pipe off the manifold like the stock setup will cure this ....

I thought of sometihng else. The 'throttle shaft' or whatever its called can get loose in its hole allowing extra air into the carb, that may screw up your idle. It was pointed out to me that there is no seal on this shaft in the pony carb so you cant rebuild or clean it away. If it gets hogged out it stays hogged. You can check tis out by spraying carb cleaner around the shaft where it enters the carb and listening for the idle to speed up more.

hope this helps. Im not a carb expert on this or any other planet, but maybe this arcane bit of knowledge will turn out to be useful

Yeah the icing is a real pain.A quick fix is "Isoheet"from Autozone or anywhere else,a fuel line antifreeze. Its about a buck a bottle and works very well.We only have about 3 mos. of real carb icing weather here in Ga,so this gets me by.
