For some reason I just figured there'd be more people with a vehicle of this type on here. Just for my own greedy purposes, I'd like to ask everyone that uses this forum to post a reply to this, so the rest of us can see who we are... Thanks...

Re: How many of us are there?

I'm here. I have an 89 s10 reg cab short bed, 4.3 auto 4x4 3in body lift, many bolt ons and I am trying to wedge 33" tires under her. I have already bought front fender cutouts. just waiting for my more experienced friend to get some time to do them. Also having some engine problems. all sensors , egr and iac valves replaced. truck still hesitates and boggs down when starting also irratic idle when cold. Any suggestions??

Re: How many of us are there?

You might want to check the outputs from the manifold absolute pressure (MAP) sensor. I'm not sure if this can cause it or not, but might. I have a friend with fuel injection on a full size Blazer, but I can't remember what sensor is causing it. I'll try to find out, and let you know. Is that the one with the CPI type injection, or the throttle body style? Does it run ok when it's warm? From my relatively limited experience with fuel injection, about the only other advice I have is that sometimes the least likely sensor/wire/item will be the one causing the problem. Is it registering any trouble codes?

Re: Please write at least a small message here, if you own one of these trucks. I want to see how many there are!

I just got a 99 S10, but it's 2wd. My primary off-road vehicle is a fullsized 78 Chevy. I'm considering a prerunner style kit for the S10, but only if it's high quality and long travel, with the balljoint wear problem addressed. Either that or I'll move to the dark side of the force and lower it, since I already have an off-road vehicle that practically sucks my wallet out of my pants trying to get the money out of it.

Re: Please write at least a small message here, if you own one of these trucks. I want to see how many there are!

NOOOOOOOO! Don't lower it! There are FAR too many lowered S-10's out there and it sort of upsets me/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif.

I've seen some very good long travel 2wd kits out of fab shops in the Orange/San Diego County area for the S-10's and I think they look sweet.

From there you just need some good shocks and a good shock hoop, cut holes in your bed and stick some reservoirs shocks out from the axle with a custom bar across the bed.

As far as the balljoints go, there's always Uniballs! Pretty good quality and not as expensive as other "racing" balljoints.

But plesae, DON'T lower it. Unless, of course, you want to! /wwwthreads_images/icons/cool.gif

Re: Please write at least a small message here, if you own one of these trucks. I want to see how many there are!

I'd prefer to make a prerunner out of it, but it was bought with the intention of being a daily driver, so I can't do anything too radical to it. This is the truck that hauls the parts for my other truck. I'm the type of guy that can't help modifying my trucks though, so I have to do SOMETHING to it. Decisions, decisions.

I have a 98 sonoma with extended cab, sport bed and the 4.3L, its also 2wd and I have 30 X 9.50 BFG AT' s on it now. The only reason I dont have it lifted is cash, Fabtech has 3 options, a 3 inch kit, a 3 1/2 inch kit, or a 6 1/2 inch kit which is a combination of the two. Check that out before you look at dropping it will ya ;)

Well, I just found the message base, and just had to write and tell about my beastie ..

I have an '85 S10 X-Cab 4x4, slightly oversize tires, spray liner from firewall to tailgate, fully rebuilt body. Next thing to do is to spend some money on more power in the 2.8l engine, and a lift kit .. not sure if its going to be 3" or 5". Take a look at an older picture (before the spray in liner) of my truck .. ( ftp://24.66.193.65/pub/graphics/naekid.jpg ) personal plate is my email name .. NaeKid (no child).

Catch ya later!

Re: Please write at least a small message here, if you own one of these trucks. I want to see how many there are!

Hello,
I suppose that I kind of qualify. I have a 1986 Jeep Cherokee XJ which, as you may already know, offered the Chevy 2.8L 60 degree V-6 as an option from 1984-1986. Like all '86 2.8s, mine has the larger crankshaft, journals and one piece rear main seal than the pre '86 engines. Unlike the later GMs, my engine has the Rochester 2SE carburetor instead of fuel injection, centrifugal and vacuum timing advance and a HEI ignition system that features an external ignition coil. My motor mounts, I believe, are also different because the engine is in a uni-bodied truck instead of a body on frame one. Mine has cast iron heads and I would guess so do the S-10/15s. My nephew's 1982 Camaro's 2.8 has aluminum heads.

While I've heard that the 2.8L is an unreliable engine, mine has over 120k miles on it now; it still runs well and gets about 20 MPG highway and 14-15 city. I haven't had to do any work to it yet, other than routine maintenance. I will grant you that it is not a powerful engine, particularly since it is carbureted, but it does ok in my Jeep in both on and off road driving. It is a smooth running motor and very light, which helps keep the front and rear weight percentages close.

Re: Please write at least a small message here, if you own one of these trucks. I want to see how many there are!

While it may not have a ton of power, from my experience, it is difficult to kill. Last year, I was playin' on the sand dunes, and something in the carbuerator broke, and I had to get that fixed, but the motor still runs just fine. I'm thinking of getting a rebuilt carbuerator, because it still isn't running as well as it did before that carb broke, I believe the shop I took it to didn't find all the internal problems with the carbuerator or something. But anyway, still a pretty good little engine.

Most of my avowed Chevy friends tell me not to fool with the 2SE carburetor. Other than spraying it with Gumout Carb Cleaner, I haven't. They recommend to buy a new or rebuilt one if there is something wrong.

I'm not sure if I'm going to get a rebuilt Rochester carb, or go with a Holley, Edelbrock, or other brand. Any one have any suggestions?

Re: Please write at least a small message here, if you own one of these trucks. I want to see how many there are!

I've used all three, and if you aren't a carburator whiz, the Edelbrock is the way to go. I've used them on two cars and 1 boat, and a total of 5 of my friends use them. The engines have always started right up after installation, and run like a dream after some minor tuning to the carb. They're also a hell of a lot easier to work on than a Holley or a Quadrajunk.

That's a dan cryin' shame! /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif. I got a buddy with a '99 ZR2 Blazer that he does take off road, and it looks like it handles nicely. Myself? 1998 Chevy S-10 4x4... Well on the road to getting it beat to [censored]...

Take care, and welcoome to the mid-size list!

I own an 83 S10 Ext Cab 4x2 Pickup, I'm in the process of fixing. I'll eventually get a 4x4 frame to fit under it. It's still good off-road, just not rock crawling.

That's definitely cool. I was thinking about trying to put a Toyota frame under my S15, because they have all the high articulation suspension kits for their trucks. However, I'll probably end up leaving it alone, or getting a custom setup. Good luck with your project... Make sure you keep it shiny side up. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

I have an 84 GMC S-15 EXT CAB 4X4 with a 2.8 liter engine and manual trans. It has 202,000 miles on it (70,000 on current engine and 26,00 on a rebuilt tranny. I haven't lifted it because college is taking all my money, but I did stuff thirty inch tires under it. My truck is fighting a losing battle with cancer, but I plan to tackle that problem soon

Okay, this one wasn't mine, but I lived with my folks when Dad had it. 1985 Sport model - 4x4, shortbed, 5-speed, 235/75's, 2.8 with a carb. Most gutless vehicle anyone in the family has ever owned, but also the most reliable. He bought the truck with 60,000 on the ticker & added another 100K to that. Only things he replaced on the truck in that time was brake pads/shoes, tires, and one headlight bulb. No mechanical or electrical failures of any kind.

Well here is the scoop! 94 s10 4x4 with the 4.3liter soon to aquire a 3" body lift and a locker I think. To tell you the truth I am an avowed toyota fan but they are hard and expensive to come by. My current ride is an 84' toy with four gerbls under the hood that are a bit on the tired side. The chevy was aquired for my autobody class and also to replace a rusting trusty toy. Hope to have all dents and bends gone by the end of the quarter but we'll just have too see.
Glad there is a board for s10's 'cause I don't know what I would do with out a board to post my ?'s on. See ya'll around! Much luck!

Same here, buddy. Got rid of my '90 Toy 4x4 and ended up buying a '98 S-10. I thought I just wanted the motor to throw in my Toy, but ended up buying the whole truck!!!

Aside from ground clearance, I'm quite frickin' happy /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif.
