Please Help! Urgent Carb Trouble

Well, my engine is shot (87 258). I blew the connecting rod. Just before I had massive problems with the computer carb. It wouldn't idle, it missed horribly, and I dont think it ever had any power. Now I am getting a rebuilt 258. I am doing the Nutter bypass, and taking out the computer. I have eliminated all the sensors and unnecesary wiring. I have pluged all the manifold holes including a block off plate for the egr. I need a simple carb now that can be easily adjusted and is non expensive. I am NOT shelling out the cash for a new Weber. I was thinking of getting a pre-emissions Carter off of a CJ that would bolt right up. I need all the opinions and insights I can get. Part numbers would also help greatly! Thanx

Just order one from an 80 CJ 258, my carb is not computer controlled at all. Before you put it on drill out the idle tubes and you should be fine. I don't have a P/N but I have heard of using Rochester 2G from a V6 Jeep.

the stupid stepper motor. They listed it in there book.
Sorry I don't have a # but if your local people can't help
you e-mail me and I'll call-em and get it.
I did'nt even know they made a carb that new w/o a stepper.

I can get a rebuilt early Carter for $125 Canadian. But, I have heard a few good things about the Rochester. Does anyone have more info on this? And why would I have to drill out the idle tubes?

Rylan,
I hope you live in a non-emissions inspection state...if you do have to have it tested then you will flunk the visual big time. To be honest, pulling off all the emmissions controls will most likely not help. I have an 84 with the Carter BBD....Mine was runing good...well, this morning I just completed the HEI mod.....DAMN!......what they all say is true....for the first time in my life I can acutally pass cars......oh what a feeling.....now watch my gas mileage go down (due to lead foot)....Regarding the Nutter bypass....if you do the HEI....I don't really think you need to do that....and if you dump the Carter BBD...the computer will not even be in the circuit.....
