I'll be moving to Phoenix/Mesa AZ area in the spring/summer. I'm lookin' for fellow zukers in the area to tell me what it is like out there and how/where is the wheeling. I know there are alot of zuki's out there and I hope to be wheelin' with you next summer! The only time I have really been to a desert area was in the "Gulf War"(first time I ever saw a zuki and fell in love with it), so I need to know what mods I need to do to prepare for the heat and such. Any insight to the area will be appriciated. -Shawn-

Shawn,
You will love wheeling in AZ. I did. I'd move there just for the wheeling. Best terrains, and it can be done year round. Head into the hills for snow in the winter or for some afternoon rain in the summer. Great gully climbs with unforgiving sharp a$$ rocks, and cool abandoned mines. Wide open spaces to go balls out if you want too. I spent 3 weeks at Dave King's place and he took us all round for some great wheeling. (Did I ever thank you Dave? If I did, it wasn't enough!) He also has some great tricks for making a good desert sami. You will probably love AZ. You'll have to learn to Siesta in the afternoon during the summer (cause of the heat) but that helps make for nice long days. I am envous! Maybe in my next life! Enjoy. Safe journey and God speed.

well shawn ive lived here my whole life so i cant really tell you how to prepare for the heat. you just do it. if you dont have ac make sure you can take your doors off and a bikini top does good to keep it open but it also blocks the sun so you dont get fried. we do pretty much have anything you wanna wheel here. even mudd occasionally if you know the right spots. go to www.zuksofarizona.com , this is my clubs website. lots of pics and stuff too check out. im sure you'll love it here......well at least you'll like the wheelin. good luck

ZOA & other thoughts

Zukes of AZ has been around since '99. They have a nice website and you can join their Yahoo Groups page.

We've found, from personal experience, that it is very difficult to make contact with other Zuki people here in AZ.

We stop and leave windshield notes on every Zuki we see.
We hang out and wait for Zuki owners to exit from stores.
Most of them aren't the most "open" folks you'd expect to meet. Granted, we HAVE met some awesome folks by our behavior. But far fewer than we'd expect under the circumstances.

That doesn't deter us. We will STILL go up to a stranger (as long as they are in a Zuki) and try to introduce ourselves. It just doesn't always work here in AZ.

Back in 1999 here in the Verde Valley, we spent $30 placing a classified ad trying to form a VV Zuki Club. We got not one call. We still wave at any oncoming Zuki but we can tell you the last time somebody waved back was in 2001.

Weird, huh? Go figure.

Well, Arizona is Zuki Heaven. There are more places for Zukis here than you can possibly imagine. Yeah, Utah is probably better but then you're dealin' with the "local culture." Our local culture is cheap beer, t-shirts and lettin' it all hang out. In more ways than one.

Hope you find it to be so for yourself.

Re: ZOA & other thoughts

Bobby, thanks for the website, It looks good to me, and it looks like we will be neighbors. Ari, where is Verde Valley, it is not on my map. I will be the one hunting YOU down, I know every zuki in my town now, I like it that way. Mine you CAN'T miss. Black, White and Grey camo with air horns!!! I hope to see y'all out there. I tried to post a pic of me and the zuki, but I can't get the #^%^&$ pic down to under 100K. Sorry...
