Parts Washer Solution: Suggestions?

Hi all,

I'm looking for some sort of fluid to put in an old parts washer I somehow acquired.

A few thoughts have gone through my mind... Simple Green for its effectiveness, safety to skin, and relative cheapness.

In the past I've used the paint-can of Hydro-Seal with the little basket inside. More of that?

Or what else?

I remember back in the days of old one could get some really nasty caustic stuff for these things that was so strong, if you spilled some on the floor and didn't wipe it up right away, you'd see rice. I dont think I want something that strong just because I'm clumsy.

Would simple green do the trick? I use it full strength with old toothbrushes on parts and it does do a good job, bus the constant flow and recycling would add to the effect.

Whats the input from yous guys?

Believe it or not, there aren't gallons of it lying around for the taking here in the offices! :)

of COURSE I want to put parts cleaner in it!!

I'm just looking for suggestions on what brands... I know that most of the stuff you buy on the shelf is pretty much pressurized rubbing alcohol so I was looking for a good compromise between "effective" and "dissolves people."

careful what you buy, they sometime brag about how "earth friendly" their product is to make up for the fact it dosent work well. Of course you dont want to hurt the enviroment but you want something that works too

you should try mineral spirits, or pertroleum distalates. neither one realy bothers my hands unless all day and you can always wear gloves. it can also be run through a filter. and is fairly cheap.

you have also blown my whole image of cat I figured it was just piles of parts everywhere.

I would think that the simple green would start to foam after being pumped. you should also check and see what will work with the pump some stuff will eat up the seals. diesel might be a good option due to its non rubber destroying nature. and is even cheaper. you can even use the old to start one heck of a bon-fire. you ought to look into a heating attachment I have used a few and hot solvent works even better than room tempature.

you could always try an industrial solvent called MEK it works great, just wear big gloves, and dont leave anything aluminum in there to long. you dont even have to polish off the paint when done it will slide off like cheese off of a pizza. just remember big gloves.

MEK isnt hard on the hands. Its a lot like acetone but doesnt leave a residue. I use it for everthing that i would use lacquer thinner for, prepping metal for paint, etc. Herculiner specifically says to use MEK. Unless were talkin about a different MEK.

Plain ole parts washer solution works best, imho.
