My 89 XJ with a 4.0L will not idle right. Replaced IAC, but when I start it RPM's will shoot up to around 2000. Does not do it all the time. Can IAC be adjusted? Any other suggestions? Very angering!!!
Yep I second the TPS for erratic idle. Replace it and make sure the arm lays right. You can check out http://home.earthlink.net/~jeepcherokee/Engine/Basic%20Diagnostics.htm which goes over the voltage reading the new TPS should be set at. May also need to have the dealer ajusted it.
It probably is the TPS but I had the same problem on a Subaru I have. It was the "throttle kick" from the AC. I had disconnected the AC compressor for winter to keep it from coming on and it thew the computer into a frenzy. In park and Neutral it would rev to about 2500 to 3000 RPM's. It's a long shot but another route you can look at.
I would check the vacum lines off of the throttle body especially if you bought it used , people like to plug things thinking they know what they are doing.
I did find a vacume problem on the t-body. As you face the engine on the left side of the t-body there are 2 v-lines. the lower one had a line. However, the upper was plugged witha screw. I can't find a vacum diagram anyplace. Any Idea what was supposed to go there?
The a/c is unhooked right now. But, when in drive it does the same thing. If I dont hold the brake it will speed up to aroud 20mph on its own. thanks anyways.
