The post on Caddy engines swaps got me to thinking a little bit about "other" engine swaps, such as Buick Olds and Pontiac engines. Its been a while since I dealt with any and was trying to remember if the BOP bellhousings could work with a Chevy tranny (SM465). I seem to run across a lot of older non Chevy GM cars for considerably less than the Chevys and have thought about getting one of them for a donor engine. I've even thought about the Caddy diesel engines, but I don't think they offer much of a power gain for the effort. Let me kknow what you think.

I'm not sure what tranny you are referring to, but I do know that Chevy's have a different bolt pattern than B.O.P. Some chevy trannies have dual bolt patterns to fit both. Even if it doesn't they sell 1/2" spacers that adapt either pattern to the other.
A thumping 455 would be bad, but who knows if it'll fit! Good luck.

I run a Buick 225 in my CJ5. If it is a manual tranny, the transmission end of the bellhousing is the same for Chevy and BOP. Buick engines tend to be more torquey than chevys and are great in Jeeps. The 225 is the V6 version of the old Buick 300 and the torque peaks at 2200. It will keep firing down to 300 rpm if you are brave.

If you get a bellhousing from a '66-71 V6 CJ5 or Jeepster Commando they are BOP and will bolt to Jeep transmissions.

If it is an automatic, the bellhousing is built into the tranny. Some trannys are dual pattern, and adaptors can be had.

Years ago, my Dad had a 65 CJ with an aluminum block v-8 out of, I think, an F-85 olds. I am not sure if that is the correct name for the car, but I know it was Olds. He also put the steering on the Jeep. I am sure the thing has been scrapped by now, but I sure wouldn't mind getting my hands on it if it wasn't. Nostalgia you know.

The aluminum F-85 engine uses the old style Buick b/h (same as the current Land Rover). Lakewood and others have manual trans b/h's that have both the BOP and the Chevy patterns. I believe that the SM420 is a direct bolt up but that the SM465 requires the indexing hole to be bored out larger. Also, the Lakewood b/h will accept a Ford tranny.
