I have been looking for a compact truck. I dont realy know what make / models hold up well and what doesnt. it will be a daily driver and ocasionally be used to tow my suzuki (3000+) with trailer. as well as a small hores trailer. so far I have been borrowing a toyota with the 3.0 v6 for towing I have also been concidering the gmc(chevy) safari mini vans. any opinions?

A mini truck is NOT built to tow 3000lbs + trailer or a loaded horse trailer. I would say a 1/2 ton at the very least and even that a little short in the brake area

Don't mean to sound rude, but sounds like he is wants to pull a elephant with a piss ant. Dont try it. You will live longer. #1 vehicle not rated for that type of load. #2 brakes (if the ones onthe trailer fail) not up to the job. #3 3000 lbs zuk on a trailer with say 900 lbs trailer, just aint going to handle well. I not going to say any thing about the hores trailer . Please look at something larger to handle the loads.

I guess you never have herd of trailer brakes?

as a matter the fact the dodge dakota is rated to tow around 3200 to 4000 lbs depending on configuration

after a search on here I have found many arnt towing their suzukis with fullsise trucks many are using small trucks and suvs (one is using a lx7 and bragging about travling at 70+mph)

I tow my samurai 1 trip a year the samurai is about 3000 lbs and on ocasion I tow a (1 horse ) on flat ground both trailers have brakes

so in this case since no one is going to recomend towing with anything that isnt full size how do the smaller trucks such as the tacoma dakota and rangers hold up

I had a 97 Tacoma 4x4 with a 4cyl. 5spd. It would tow my 19.5 ft boat. It was a real chore to get it rolling.. but once you got it rolling it was ok. The trailer has brakes so stopping wasn't a problem.
Very dependable truck 0 problems

Yes I've heard of trailer brakes and I know that things can go wrong. I also know that smaller truck trannys die quick death yada yada.

I used to flat tow my Samurai with an Isuzu Amigo. I now trailer it with a Dodge 3/4 ton. I'm SO much happier

Well, the newer Tacos come wiht a 3.4l V6... if you're moderately happy with the 3.0 Toy, then a Taco will be even better.

my dad loves his 95 tacoma, has something like 185K miles on it. i think that the dakota (being a little larger - oh and a V8) would be the best bang for the buck, but i am not really sure what class the chevy colorado is but it might be something to look at, seems to be in the same middle of the road type class as the dakota.

alright hope that i could help a little

Towing is an art form.....Ok, not really, but you definately need to know what you are doing. I used a 1994 4X4 Nissan king cab 5-speed pickup to tow my Samurai for about 3 years with no problems, not even a scare. I used a single axle trailer for a while and also a tandom axle. Both did very well, but you really had to get the Zuk in the right spot on the trailer so it would tow correctly. I took a trip to the 2001 ZookiMelt with this setup and it towed great even through the mountains of West Virginia. A bit more power would have been nice, but I really didn't mind downshifting to 4th or 3rd sometimes to pull up the 5 and 7 degree inclines. If I had to choose another tow vehicle and needed a vehicle that I would only tow with once or twice a year I would recommend getting something with a V6 or larger if you are intending to go through the mountains. No matter what you look for make sure that the towing capacity exceeds what you are towing. Good luck on the hunt for a new vehicle.

I have an '03 Dakota 4x4, with the V6, and it's rated @ 5900lbs (thats what the owners manual said, the Dodge website lists the capacity @ Up to 6600 Pounds). I towed my Zuk from NJ to Zookimelt, through the mountains in PA and West Virginia, and hardly knew it was behind me. Speed dropped a bit going up some of the steeper hills, but I was still able to maintain 55 mph+
