This idiot was in front of me on southbound I95 when he tossed a can out of the drivers side window of his car. It bounced twice and nailed the front of my car, sending what I could smell as beer all over my car. I immediately called 911 to report him. I stayed on the phone with the police while tailing him to tell them which mile marker I was passing. They asked me for his car's info and my car's description. I was at mile 58.5 and there was a state trooper at mile 55.6 waiting for us. As soon as I passed the trooper, I beeped twice and he took off behind us while the dispatcher told me to move to the right with my flashers on and pull behind them when the officer made the stop.
Luckily there were no dents or scratches on the car and now I get to appear as the state's witness when this guy goes to court. He was arrested for DWI and open container violations. Justice is done and the rain will wash the beer off of my car tonight.

I had to call 911 on a Cadillac with a USMC sticker centered on the back window that was bouncing off the curbs - stopped at the green light and went on the red. I felt bad because I knew it was an old vet - but nonetheless he nearly killed people on the sidewalk.

Good job!!!

Good job!

Every time I have called one in, the cops have taken too long finishing their donuts to catch the guy, and just pass it off. Ticks me off when they harass someone for a license plate light out and neglect the REAL criminals.

I was out working one night, or early AM, and had a very intoxicated girl pull up beside my car, and ask for some party. Stayed on with the police department the whole time, following her all over town. When I passed a cop, they pulled in behind me, had to tell them to get the other car. Never had to go to Court, just wrote a nice little memo for them. That was a lot of fun!

Now thats pretty cool - out of curiosity, did you just happen to have a digital camera with you? How did you get the photo?!

I used to be in the coast guard auxiliary. We followed a guy who was clearly drunk across Green Bay to a state park called Bay Shore. While we were not able to write tickets, we thought we should check it out anyway. We pulled up to the dock, tied off, got out and spoke with the guy. You could smell the beer in his breath. Well, when we approached him he had his truck backed into the water preparing to load the boat on the trailer. Apparently, the moron forgot to put it in park, the rear wheels were caught in the ridges of cement that lead into the water. His big ol Wisconsin wife climbed into the boat shaking the whole thing and there went his truck, right into the drink. I had to turn away so I could laugh when he wasn't looking at me.

People who drink and drive are so incredibly stupid, I cannot comprehend it.

I had a guy knock on my door one night around 1AM. Being the night owl I am I was awake and opened it thinking it might have been a friend of mine in need but turned out to be some drunk who mistook my single story house for the two story house across the street. He wanted to show me his new truck so I obliged and got all the vehicle info and called the cops. Within 2 minutes I saw 3 cruisers going around my neighborhood looking for him, though I don't know if he was ever caught.

Way to go !!

I just had one of those on my way home from work a few weeks ago. Fortunately it was still within the city limits where i work and i just called it in on my portable and got three units to hit him right before he hit the county. It was this guys 3rd in 10 years (which in VA makes it a felony). The guys were laughing at me because i seem to get more dui's when i'm off duty than when i'm working.

side note... Mark, play nice, yes i stop for tag lights, but i've found a bunch of drugs and a few guns that way as well (real criminals). i happen to be very fond of krispy kreme's but i do not let them interfere with my catching bad guys. also when we get a call on a citizen complaint we actually have to witness the driving behavior or another violation in order to make a stop (silly 4th ammendment). but then again, maybe the cops in your neck of the woods are different. ok, back to jeeps

Jeepchick and I were on our way to BWI's overlook to watch the jets take off and land. There is an observation park right at the end of one of the main runways. The planes are about 150 ft. off the ground at that point, so it makes for some good pictures. That's why we just happenned to have our camera.

Nicely done. Staying on the phone, and staying behind the person is the key. Hey Jeepn, back off a little would ya? If a police officer is only 10 blocks from the call, there is opportunity for 20 intersections in 4 different directions that any given car can take. Without constantly updated information, it makes it tough, and because of civilian lawsuits, most agencies aren't even allowed officers to violate the speed limit in an attempt to intercept the vehicle. Plus, if your community is anything like ours, the chances of having an available officer because of manpower issues is about 1 in 10. Off of my soap box now, no hard feelings intended. Again, applause Bee240, if we all help to get the ones we can, there will be a few less on the road, if only for a little while.

Two years ago on New Years (about 1am) I was driving home from a buddies house. Doing about 55 (the speed limit) in my CJ when I could see a car coming on a crossroad way too fast to stop for the stop sign. I immediately hit the brakes and locked up all four wheels getting the CJ slowed down just enough to miss the car's rear bumper by inches. The car swerved around another car that was sitting at the stop sign when it blew through it. I knew the driver would have to be drunk to do something so stupid. I turned around and started chasing the car while my girlfriend at the time called the Idaho State Patrol on the cell. I knew in the back roads of Idaho, if I lost sight of the car, they would never get caught. I chased the car for about 20 minutes and noticed another car had joined the chase. I was a bit nervous that it was a friend of the drunk, but I was not about to give up. Eventually , the driver got lost and pulled into a gas station. I pulled my CJ in front of the car and jumped out and yelled for the driver to shut off the car. I was VERY suprised to see that it was a 16 (or so) year old girl with a girl passenger that couldn't have been more than 14. The driver was completely trashed. The second car that was chasing turned out to be the car at the stop sign that almost got hit. It was a mother with a child in the car and she was furious and wanted the driver in trouble. She pulled in behind and we blocked the car in. I had to hold the mother back from assaulting the drunk girl (I wanted to let her do it, but I didn't want her in trouble).
The ISP finally showed up (in force) and arrested the girl.
Funny thing is, when they pulled up, they thought my CJ was the vehicle in question, so one cop takes his big old Maglite and raps the side of my CJ...I assume to startle anyone that may be hiding in it?? I was like "hey buddy, wrong vehicle".

As a police officer myself, this topic interests me. In my experience, about 90% of supposed drunk drivers called in by the public are actually not. It seems we are forever chasing down drivers who were adjusting their radio, or happened to accidentally cut off the person complaining. Granted, late at night the percentages go up, as there are more intoxed drivers on the roadways that do need to be stopped and checked out. Citizens are always complaining to me about our response time. We, at least here, have too much ground to cover, and without a valid reason, cannot speed with lights and sirens, or "code #3" as we call it. That response is reserved for life or death situations only. If I do speed a little to make up some ground, I'm open for complaints about speeding without lights on, Go figure. If I could only use my Jeepo, you know, cut some corners, take some shortcuts......I might be on to something here! The other post was about cops stopping people for tag lights and the such. You would be very surprised at how many arrests come after a stop for something simple like that. Bad people don't keep their cars up to spec, plain and simple. O.K., no more ranting.

pointers for calling in suspected drunk drivers...

give dispatcher the following info...

vehicle description
tag (including state)
occupants
location and direction
specific driving behavior (weaving in lane, crossing lines, driving over mailboxes/little old ladies, disregarding traffic signals)
your name and a phone number where the officer can contact you if you are unable to stay behind the vehicle (you can ask the dispatcher not to put it over the air)

all of these things will not only make your call more credible than "all units BOL for a green 95 chevy pickup driven by john, vehicle left 123 Elm unkown direction of travel, unkown tag, caller says he's drunk, refused complaintant, no further", but they will also give the officer more reasonable suspicion to stop the vehicle if the caller is known and willing to speak with the officer.

the other way doesn't really make you want to run out and find the guy too hard especially when more than likely john is on his way to pick up grandma to take her to church and his ex is just bitter and trying to get the police to bother him

I've been pulled over a couple times in the past couple months, never gotten a ticket but I'm pretty sure 2 or 3 of the times they were checking to see if i was drunk. 1 Time i was doing 70 at 2am with a parts waggy in tow, towing a waggy down the road with my beater truck at 2am looks suspicious on it's own. Another time was in the town i go to school in driving my tj for my tail lights out, my tj never drove straight so i'm pretty sure the officer thought i might have been drunk but i wasn't either time i was pulled over. I'm guess when you get pulled over within the 1st couple seconds of an officer talking to you they can tell if you are drunk or not and i'm pretty sure they use things like speeding and liscinse plates to get drunks. A quick question for all the officers on the board can you tell the last time a vehicles plates have been run?

At the risk of sounding snotty - if your license plate light is burned out, and having a burned out license plate light is illegal, in reality aren't you a criminal?

Haha Just playin with ya Jeepn...

Seriously though - the cops out there put their lives on the line every day so that Jeepchick can drive on the highways safely and walk through the parking lot at the mall safely.

Haven't any of you ever watched an episode of Cops? Dear god I can't believe the TRASH they have to deal with.

I posted that particular picture due to it not showing his face, just the cop's face. Jeepchick asked the one officer if it was alright if she took pictures of everything, and he said that it was perfectly legal to do so.
At no point did I give his identity or information. I made sure of that before posting the picture.
