OT-Cheaper places for Ford Anti-theft keys?

736 Views 9 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Jim_Lou
Just picked the wife up a 1999 Ford Explorer (finally getting rid of the Plymouth! YEAAHHH!!!!)....(Means all four of our rigs are 4wd...though I plan to make that 3 rigs as soon as I can sell the Bronco). Anyhow, they only gave us a single key, and we find out that it will be $20 for the additional key and $80 shop labor!!!! That's $100 for a second key!

I was wondering if anyone knew a cheaper place to buy these keys than the dealer, or if there was a way to disable the anti-theft feature?

Thanks!

Shop labor??? For what?

wasn't there a thread somewhere about getting a regular old copy and then taking the head (for lack of a better word) of the secuity key and stuffing into the column near the ign. cylinder?? It sorta defeats the security part, but I am not sure how much you really want/need that feature anyway, and you can still lock your doors, just means that any copy key will start your ford.

I don't remember what type of key/vehicle that was for, none of my vehicles are new enough to have all this fancy stuff, heck only one of my vehicles uses a key at all now that I think about it.....

$100.00 for a key is a ripoff!!!!! I have a 2001 Chevy Venture w/ the security key. When we bought ours (used, from a Chevy dealer) it came w/ 1 key & 1 remote. The dealer got us a second remote & 2 keys for FREE. I mean heck, you just dropped a couple grand w/ the dealer for the truck. The least they can do is give you an extra key or 2. If they won't, check with a locksmith (real one, not local hardware store), they may be able to cut one for you.
Go see Cal! Go see Cal! Go see Cal!

Uh, or is that where you got the Feerd?

The shop labor is to get the car's computer to recognize the electronic code in the new key, but I can't imagine why that should take more than a few minutes.

We just got a new Volvo for The Boss, and it came with two fancy keys and a 'valet' key. The latter is just a plain key, but it will do everything the fancy ones will except for unlocking the glove box and doing the remote unlock-turn-on-the-lights stuff.
Thanks everybody!

Have located a Key shop in Anchorage that can supposedly do the key, will be contacting them tommorow.

Oh, Cal! LOL, naw got this one at Nye....bought the first fullsize Bronco I owned (a verrrrryyy nice 93) from Cal though!

Gotta say, why when my rigs get more advanced, they are harder to take care of and harder to own?

LOL!

I would avoid using the valet key. On my first drive after getting my learners permit I went for a drive in my dad's Grand and somehow manged to lock us all out of the Jeep and set the alarm off. To this day I have no idea how I managed to do it. My dad had to walk all the way home to get the fancy key to turn the alarm off. While he was gone somm jack a$$ took the time to tell me he thought I should get a ticket for setting off the alarm. Moral off the story: be careful with those valet keys. I won't drive the Grand without a fancy key now. I felt like such an idiot

Bo worries on the valet key. In the Volvo system it turns off the alarm when it unlocks the door. I guess they figure that nobody is likely to ever pick the lock.
