I installed a set of superior axles on our CJ-8.
I checked all spec's and when i would bolt up the
backing plate-seal-retainer i would get drag on the
axle.
IT has to be the seal rubbing on the bearing on the axle.
I put 50 slow miles on it to day then drove it to work at
45 to 55 MPH and at work the flange was hot, you just could
hold your hand on it and that was all.
Is this normal, What do I do now? I have called superior twice
and they are very nice but no help but then what is drag you
have to almost be there./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

Did the axles come with the bearings pressed on? I have used Superior's stuff before and the kits always need a little tweaking.

Is it happening on both sides?

No had to have the bearing pressed on by the local NAPA.
Yes this is happening on both sides and it seems about
evenly hot both sides.
I tryed to use the spacers as is and found the draging.
only did the one side. Had about .082 bearing race sticking out.
pulled out race and cut both sides so there about .022 one side
and .035 the other but they still would drag. Had the one side
apart 4 times looking and doing the math findly gave up and said to
myself looks right so got to work ????
/wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif Still don't feel good about the heat thing.
I'm at a lost../wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

See that you like gunsmithing, i like to play around on guns
a little too, seems easyer to keep things tight on guns than it is
on some things like this axle thing.Therunout on the axle houseing
was something like .010 to .015 with out my notes to look at.This is
where the spacers bottom out on the cut in the houseing.

You may need to remove the buffer block inside the diff. I have heard of this is sometimes necessary when using the Superior kit.

I don't mean to start a war but you should have used Moser axles. I have installed 7 sets of moser axles in Jeeps with various goals in the owners minds. Never once has there been a problem. I currently have moser's in my 78CJ that have been in almost two years. I run 35's and spend most of time in the mud and sand of Florida. I have heard the arguments about axles before, but that's just my experience.

If it is the dana 20 axel upgrade Like I did on my cj 7. I had to use one of the spacers from the old axel set I took out The ones Between the brake backing plate and where it mounts to the axel tube mount,Because mine were dragging too. I did not want to take the rear apart to take out that spacer thing, or remove the seals or the provided spacer to grind it.It seems to have worked fine because it is the bearing dragging on the brake backing plate that is causing the problem.

Foote is a Co. I know of. Superior has had some good things said about them
by Parts Mike and a write up on a D35 axle upgrade from off-road.
The Moser install the same don't they??? Seal--spacer--backing plate--
-seal--retainer????
Im live in a jeep no mans land so the board is the only place for infomation
for me.
