On TFI upgrades

Just a couple of questions but first,if using yard parts,i just found that a 79 and also a 80 Ford Granada with the 250 six cyl also has the large two piece cap that screws down,i just put them on my 86 258.Though the plug wires are not up to snuff as the Granada dont have a TFI coil on it,so you still have to get the "good" wires.Just thought i would add this in case someone is yard searching.

OK,now the question - i see the TFI coil listed in the instructions at Trailhead, com is from 1981 Ford F-150 Pick Up Truck With A 300 CID I-6 Engine and in another paragraph a
84 Ford F-150 Pickup with a V-8 engine (WITH-EEC) is both the same coil? Or am i reading the comma in the instructions wrong?
here is a snip of it:

This upgrade will bring your Jeep ignition system into the mainstream 70's technology.

HIGH PERFORMANCE UPGRADES:
Once the cap, rotor and plug wires have been upgraded, then you can use some 80's technology in the form of the THICK FILM INTEGRATED (TFI) ignition coil.
The TFI coil is Motorcraft's answer to the GM HEI coil, and out performs the common GM HEI coil by about 1-1/2 times.
(Yes, that's correct, the TFI coil stomps the GM HEI coil)
The TFI coil will work with ALL of the Duraspark modules. It's an odd looking thing, but can be mounted in any orientation (even up side down).
The coil from a '84 Ford F-150 Pickup with a V-8 engine (WITH-EEC)

is the 81 coil a TFI?

also i have a TFI coil from a injected 85 4 cyl Tempo,is it the same coil as well?

I know tis has been gone over a lot but having more than one part source at yards sure helps (cap and rotor) and just trying to clarify in my own mind any differences between TFI's or if the 81 coil listed in instructions shouldnt have been listed since it says a 84 V8 right below it.?

I have friends with Eagles and Jeeps that dont own a computer at all to find this stuff out themselves and i surely dont want to give wrong part numbers or advice as what to get, to anyone..Also i am not picking apart the instrctions, just wanting to clarify to myself, for others is all.

The cap base, cap, and rotor all come from a 80 ford 300. Depending on the year you might not have to use a resistor. I have
a 78 with a 258, and I didn't have to use a resistor. My buddy has a 77 that had a the prestolite ignition and he had to use
a resistor. I used wires from a 83 ford fairmont this set had a female type coil wire that you'll need for the TFI coil. This coil is
on most ford cars and trucks starting in 84. Just the counter guy for the square ford coil from the mid to late 80's ford's.

Alec (did I spell it correctly this time /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif). is correct for the most part.
The screw down cap base was only used on pickups in part of '81 and all of '82.
It was used on all '82 I-6 Fords, so that's why I recommend the '82 for the source.

They only made one screw down base for the I-6, so if you find one, it's the correct one!!
Plug wires from any 300 CID I-6 should work. (Any I-6 with electronic ignition should work GM- Ford or otherwise.)

The E-core coil was tested for two years on select models starting in '84, and was used with the TFI ignition (module on distributor instead of the fender).
It went on everything wearing the ford name '86 to '96 when the TFI ignition was standardized, and is still used on some ford stuff today.
Don't forget to get the coil mount and wiring harness connector when you find one!!!

That E-core coil uses a coil wire with a 'spark plug' boot and connector on both ends, otherwise, that's the only change.

Good luck.

I understand what you all are saying,i was asking about the instructions for the TFI at Trailhead where at one place it says 81 coil and below a 84 V8* coil,i wasnt saying you had the year or models wrong, just that there is a "ign coil - 81" listed and below a "84 - F150 V8 coil" listed,it was just confusing and didnt know if a coil should have been listed to use from a 81, either a 81 or 84, or just a 84 alone. So to sum it up then, a E core TFI from any Ford made is all the same, be it 4 cyl 6 cyl or 8?
As for the spark plug wires on the 79/80 Granada i got the cap from,of course they had correct ends, the coil wire didnt though cause it still had the tin can type. they were small diameter low voltage type wires, why i said the "good wires" like 8mm silicone oem or aftermarket was still needed if ya pulled a cap and base from the 79/80 Granada's.Mainly just another model to raise the hood on in the yard for anyone new to TR's upgrade, which BTW sure helped my 258,thanks TR

Ford Made several versions of the E-core coil in it's production run from '84 to present.
All are covered by the same part number now, so in essence, they are the same coil.
There are only two Ford coils for electronic ignitions.
The Canister Coil, like you are used to on almost everything, and the E-core (TFI Style) coil that is used on everything from '86 to present.
You can use either with upgrade, but the E-core coil makes A LOT more spark energy.

Good luck.
