Oil pan leak..I hope...

Well, I guess ole Blue knows we have to drive home 9 hours, cause she started leaking oil this week.

I knew it was leaking some, cause there would be drips everywhere I parked, but when I was changing the plugs yesterday I noticed a LOT of oil sitting on top of the D30 pumpkin. Like puddles of it...so I got under and tightened down the oil pan bolts. There are a couple that I couldn't get to without removing things.

I looked real good at the engine today and pretty much the whole passenger side has oil on it. It's not from the valve cover, so I'm hoping its just the oil pan gasket, but some of the oil is above the oil pan..what else could be leaking? It's not the filter either..

Thanks guys

Sean

Oil pressure sending unit? Crankcase breather? Dipstick tube? Filler cap? Are you sure its oil? Could be power steering fluid? Diff or transmission oil? Rear main seal bad and flywheel slinging oil up the engine? Timing chain cover? Mechanical fuel pump gasket? What engine is it? The oil will tend to get blown around when you are moving, and so it could end up higher than it was leaking from.
Have fun,

It's a 258 engine. It had a mechanical oil pressure guage installed when I bought it...so I don't know what the deal with the original is...
The oil is mostly towards the front of the engine, right above the D30.
I know it's oil, power steering is broken, so no fluid there..

Thanks for the help..I'll try to check the senders tommorrow..

you know that a power steering system without a belt, or anything else driving the pump, will leak fluid everywhere when you turn the steering wheel right?

I have never heard of this happening to a 258 but AMC v8's have a reputation for the bolt in the end of the cam shaft losening and wearing a hole in the timeing chain cover.

Power stearing on my is on the drivers side so I would not suspect that but mine is not very stock.

Wouldn't a bad head gasket leak oil on the passenger side seeing as thats the side where the oil comes up through the pushrods and is funneled back down into the oil pan?or mabye leaky valve cover Just a thought.

I need to get a girlfriend I'm getting to close to my jeep.

When I first bought my '83 CJ, in '87, I had a leak in the front timing cover. I went to the parts store, and ordered the front crank seal, and the timing cover gasket. The GIRL at the parts counter said, "why not just buy the $34 timing chain kit?".
Best advice any parts person ever gave me in my life! Same amount of work, and almost fell over when I saw how much timing chain slop there was.

I have a belt rigged up to keep the water pump moving. Fixing the power steering is number one priority this summer. I leave for home today, so hopefully I can fix the steering next week.

Man, the whole idea of messing with the timing chain and stuff has me worried. I have never really messed with anything like that before. But hey, if I can repalce the clutch, then the timing chain should be a snap....right....hehe...

I'll keep you all informed about my progress..

I just went through this myself last weekend, same symptoms. I was pretty sure it was the pan gasket, when I tried to tighten the bots I saw the gasket ooze out quite a bit, so I got one of those nice 1 piece oil pan gaskets that 4WD Hardware sells now. It's $20, but it's the nicest gasket I ever saw. Anyway, asfter a afternoons worth of work, the damn thing was leaking in the same place as before! *^&^&*!!!
So I looked around real careful, and with the oil pan being clean now, I was able to see the oil leak coming from the damn fuel pump gasket! Oh well, I needed the pan gasket anyway, I guess.

If it's more toward the front of the block in the pass side, I'd say it's more than likely the fuel pump gasket. Mine leaks despite doing everything short of welding the fuel pump to the block. None the less, identical symptoms.

I looked real close, and some looks like it form the timing cover...but upon further inspection..it just might be the fuel pump gasket. Is this one the parts store will have, or is this a job for make-a-gasket?

Also, will oil spill out all over when I pull of the pump?

Thanks,

Sean

No oil should come spilling out of there and a parts store might sell the gasket seperately. Not sure about the make a gasket stuff. I bought some gasket material from a parts store a while back and made my own, but it isn't any better than the one that came with the pump. Right now I can't remember who posted it, but they had a sure fire way of stopping the fuel pump gasket from leaking. (The other alternative is to replace your fuel pump if it's old because then you will have a new gasket + a new pump) I think I paid less than 20 bucks for my last one.

I got my gasket from the local Autozone for $.99. Their computer said they had some in stock, but the counter man couldn't find them, so he pulled on out of a fuel pump box for me. Now some poor smuck will probably buy a fuel pump and be missing a gasket!
You could probably make a gasket, but the mating surfaces are pretty narrow. I would recommend trying to buy one.

I picked up a new gasket for $1.99 at Poop Boys. I'm out of town for a few days so I'll fix it up when I get back. I'm gonna use make-a-gasket and the gasket, hopefully the combo will stop the leak.

I had the same deal with my 258. What I was told was that any leaks on the oil pan will get blown all over the passenger side of the motor by the air coming from the fan! It blows 'up and back', based on the rotation direction of the fan, and can really fool you.

I used that same $20 one-piece pan gasket, and it's real nice. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Just what I was told, but now mine doesn't leak. /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

Good luck
