Oh no! I sprung a leak in my axle!

I was out 'wheeling this weekend, and went through a modest mud hole, and hit something on a buried rock. After getting through, I noticed a sort of grinding, rubbing noise coming from the front axle. Everything seemed to still work fine, and I could not find anything visibly wrong, so there wasn't much I could do. Anyway, I got all the way home (about 50 miles), and parked. This morning, I pulled out the Jeep to wash it, and there is a puddle of gear oil under the passenger side steering knuckle. It seems to be coming out of where the axle shaft goes into the tube (axle shaft seal?) I've attached a picture to show it - the pic was taken from the front, and is of the passenger side knuckle, where the leak is coming from.

HELP!

I don't have a total answer for you. But I've just replaced the front axle seals in my 78 cj5. They are located on each side of you pumkin (Inside ends of axle tubes). Installed from the inside. I think you may even have to pull the third member to install the seals. This appears to be the only thing that could be the problem. But I was in there replacing the r & p. I didn't have a leak. I only replaced the seals after dis-assembling the axle. I didn't want to be in there again. The seals are cheap. $10 at Advanced Auto.

IN2DEEP is right. Your going to have pull your off your hub, put the axel shaft and replace the seal which is located next to the gears. You will have to remove the carrier for the ring gear but not the pinnion. Better do both sides while while your in there. Lots of work and time, cheap part.

Dont some Ford front axles have another OUTER seal at the end of the axle tube near the knuckle?

It would be nice to machine a lip in there and get a good quality seal right there also...

Ah, crap. I knew that this fix was going to suck. OK, so how about a little help convincing the wife that this would be a good time to regear? Any good arguments? /wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif Also, as long as I have the thing torn apart, should I go ahead and replace u-joints or anything else?

some fulltime fords and chevs. i am sure that with a little research you could find a seal to work in the end of the tube. i would still run the inner seal though.

Pigpen's right. Cheap part, but a pain in the a** to change. Change both seals while your in there, and you might upgrade your axleshaft u-joints to Napa Super strength (or their equivelant), especially if you run a locker up front. I think Chuck Hadley first mentioned the Super strength u-joints on here. I tried 'em and I swear by them now. I used to grenade u-joints, usually resulting in torn up ears on my axleshafts, until I started using these suckers. No breaks since (at least not there :).
BTW, nice, big clean photo that you attached, lets see the rest of the jeep.

Cool ride and I like to see its getting used doing what does best. I'm actually starting to come around to admiring some of my square headlight bretheren, but I still love CJs more.
