I always love it (not) when I see all kinds of structural stuff plated, especially when its chrome plated.
unless its specially treated plating introduces hydrogen into the plated material and propagates something
called hydrogen embattlement.

We had a guy nearly 30 years ago with all kinds of stuff chromed on his race car, including the rear axle
housings. It killed him indirectly. the housing outer flange broke off during hot laps (prep for a 100 lap
race, full tank of fuel) and the right rear, along with the live axle, rolled off his car. He spun and backed
into the wall bending the frame, which crushed the tank, hydraulically bursting it.

Nearly 20 gallons of gas came out, hit the hot exhaust, and fireballed. The track was covered in fire, with
his car in the middle. His hip was broken in the crash and his 2.5 lb fire system (the smallest allowed, at
his insistence) couldn't make a dent in it We got him out finally, but not before he was burned horribly.
He died of his burns a few days later.

No, I don't like glitzy chrome on structural stuff.

outlawmws, errmmm, I think you mean hydrogen embrittlement.
Not a good thing to have in a spring. It mainly affects the surface layer of the part - right where the majority of the stress is in a leaf or coil spring.

You can reduce/remove it by baking the part after plating tho.

Lots of people chrome plate thier coils cos they think it looks cool, and then wonder why they fail shortly afterwards.
