Off-subject posts unappreciated

There are thousands of news groups on the Web.
Why are some of you guys clogging this SHORT WHEELBASE JEEP forum with your WAY off-subject chatting, drivel, and soap boxing? I wish you would take it some where else. I hate seeing my favorite Internet site go down the drain.
I enjoy a little banter, an good Jeep or off-road story, or some keen insight or interisting experience(from young or old) near the subject.
But some of the suff posted here lately is WAY TOO FAR off base, IMHO.

I agree!!! This is a Jeep forum. Talk about your Jeep - talk about the other stuff somewhere else

Uh... I'd just like to know one thing: "how many times can the same material be gone over?" The reason I ask that question, is because it seems that with over 25k posts in this forum, I'd say the general majority of topics have likely been gone over already, or isn't that right? The forum seems to be running a bit slowly anyway, so why not go off topic when there's the lack of on topic stuff to talk about?

(Not a flame...)

(I hope no one minds me over here, while I don't have a Jeep yet (lack of available money), I'm eventually going to be a Jeep owner figure I might as well learn as much about 'em as possible before I can afford one)... /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Gotta agree with you Sandman, but the off topic stuff is a lot of times in an area you and I are very interested in. I've been out of town for 3 days, come back and look at the almost 400 posts since then, a lot of samo, samo. BTW, stop being so grouchy John, you've probably been working too hard, if you dont' look out I'll take you out in my Jeep again and stand it on its spare tire again so you have to fall out the door to get out! /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

I'd have to agree with Tim -

It seems like we have been over this subject before too. /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif I really like the off topic stuff personally. If it is on topic "short wheelbase" or off topic "everything else," and if I don't think it is something I am interested in by looking at the subject line, I just don't open it! Maybe you should do the same with the "off topic" stuff.

Personally, I really like to see what makes fellow Jeepers "tick." Our sport is so much more than just a technical manual for the MB - TJ. Our sport is deeply intertwined in politics, philosophy, ethics, apologetics, and certainly economics just to name a few - and most of you probably don't even know you are using these disciplines on a daily basis here - you just call it your "two cents worth." Here is a brief and very poor example: If someone uses their Jeep in conjunction with one of the shooting sports, suddenly the subject "Short Wheelbase" includes second amendment rights, land use, environmental agenda, and on and on we could go. To the poster, all of these are "short wheelbase" subjects because these all revolve around the vehicle that they use to enjoy them. To some, if you take away their guns, and you might as well take away their "short wheelbase." Take away their hunting privileges and land use with the junk science of the environmental movement, and you might as well take their "short wheelbase" too because that is all they use a "short wheelbase" for. Again - this is a very brief and poor example, so don't barrage me with a thousand complaints about it - I already know it is faulty. Anyone who knows me on this board knows that I can wax an elephant at the drop of a hat and place a post that rivals "War and Peace" - but since this entire thread is "off subject" in the purist's definition of "short wheelbase" anyway . . . I'll just settle for this poor example.

(Now this is not a flame; I am just following the same logic Jaffer and Nutz posted - and if those posts were not flames, than neither is the following statement:) It could also be said there are many other "short wheelbase" BBS's out there on the net that discuss nothing but "short wheelbase" stuff. You could always "take your short wheelbase only stuff there" too so to speak. But look at the stats and the traffic: this BBS buries them all. I don't even bother visiting most of them anymore because they are deathly dry and boring and lack the technical expertise that this forum does. Look at many of the frequent contributors of this forum. Many of them don't even own a "short wheelbase" of any kind!!!! Why are they here? Shall we ban them too because they are "off subject" owners? I think they are here because of the technical info as well as the lively "off topic" discussions we enjoy on a daily basis.

Good point, peter. I agree with the sandman, there's nothing wrong with sharing things other than jeep knowledge. If you dont like it, you can:
A: Not open it.
B: Ignore it.
C: Go somewhere else
D: Open your mind to other people's thoughts and opinions.

Personally, I'd recommend "D" but its up to you.

my 2, actually, make that 1 cent...gas prices are killing me....

Me too,i dont own a Jeep, used to own several. But i have found all sorts of tips and tricks i can use on my Eagle. And i think i have learned more
about people, politics, the government here than anywhere else.Seeing what i happening to people first hand, person by person is a lot
better than the lies told on Tv news, etc. So we all arent Jeep owners, but there is another common thread tieing us all together,or several, guns and
hunting just being one,why cant we talk about it?

G
1. WoW Jay pertty well says ir for me.
2. I'm glad we do have as many not short wheel base people here they have help add alot of information.
3. Jaffer I hope your not to mad at us all. Your one of many I hope I can meet someday that are on this list. I sure would not make you jump out of my jeep that hard on us old guys . Whats wrong with you creeper Gee Wiz./wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

I agree with Sandman and all those that agree with him...the off subjects account for less than 1% of all the posts on this board...and obtw, not everyone reads those politically motivated sites. This board goes out to a wide range of ages and i think it is good for all those students and other younger people, who basically remember mostly the Clinton years, to here the truth and not be misled by what they are watching on MTV. If we are going to continue to fight for our freedoms...in the national forrests, gun rights, etc. we need to reach as many people as possible. I like it when the monotony of "which is the best lift for my CJ..." is broken up. So I dont think we need to change anything on this board...just keep up the good work!

I think where the off-topic threads become a problem is when they drag on for days at a time & produce additional threads that cover the board. Friday (a slow day as usual), there was a single off-topic thread on here when the board was slow. Yesterday afternoon, I found that single thread (which had been buried) had multiplied into about 5 threads - all on the same off-topic subject. I got involved in this particular off-topic thread as usual, but I was sick of it by yesterday. Everyone gets sick of them eventually, but it's different for each person. Most can tolerate an off-topic subject as long as it remains in a single thread & goes away after about a day. Once it's been hashed back & forth, we should all probably try to refrain from keeping it alive. Just my $.02.

Well put Jay! I visit 3 other boards and this is by far the most "enjoyable"......the flame is at a minimum and the technical info is beyond a pricetag. Just like anywhere else.....(a bar, a resturant, a gun club, a fire company) the environment takes on a "flavor" of the members. Here you get to interact with people from all walks of life that can maybe give you just a little different view on things that you take for granted. The only tollerance required here .....is the tollerance for some else's right to his or her opinion. I'd find this a little drab without CJDave, Sandman, Lone Eagle, Taz, Jay, tanner......and the rest of you guys (yes...and you too TR/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif). In spite of the occasional slightly warm debate, or rather because of it, I think that this is the best board going. If a topic gets too much for me to add my spin on things........I don't participate in it. If it's something that I feel strongly about I'll grab the soapbox and start preachin'.

You've gotta love the information age!

GeeAea you have a great handle on all this. Seems I caused quite a storm with my "radical right wing" replies. Oh well..

There's even humor on this board. Like "Off-subject posts unappreciated" as the title of an "off-topic" post.

Jaffer, you have the right to voice your opinion, just like the rest of us. If you have an opinion on something, say it. If not, it's your choice. But don't blast other people who contribute just because you can't or won't articulate your opinions. I'm not going to stop articulating my opinion for anyone! If "Off-Road.com" comes over here and moderates the board, so be it. Until then we all have the right to initiate or respond to any post on this board. And you have the right to skip over the ones that say "off topic". If you read the entire thread then you are:
1) interested in the subject, but choose not to participate;
2) interested and willing to participate, but not able to respond appropriately;
3) not interested in the subject, but can't resist reading what you're fed;
4) only interested in squelching the opinions of others whether it be the Jeep suspension that you don't endorse or the guns you don't want us to have.

I don't know why else you would read the entire post, or read enough to say you are sick of it and it's way off base, and then start your own off topic post about how you don't like everyone else's off topic posting. You either didn't read the posts, don't know what was said in them and don't care, or you don't have the confidence in yourself to make an educated reply about your own opinions.

Then again, that's just my opinion.

I've read the comments posted so far but I will stick by my guns.
(tongue in cheek). This is not supposed to be an all topic chat room.
I've been a member of this and the old board for several years now.
You can call me one of the "old guys" and I really miss some of the others who no longer post here.
I have watched this forum lose many, many of the most knowledgable and helpfull folks due to flames, snide remarks, drivel and/or their lack of time to wade through volumes of pages stuffed with way off-subject material which can become a chore instead of a fun learning experience.
No one here can ban anything. It is self policing. I'm just making puting my observations and experience here into words. And I am warning that the current trend of large band, off subject posts will eventually lead to degrading this forum and further loss of valuable members.

You said it best Big Ed.
Jaffer, you are going to shoot your eye out with all those guns. I like the diversity. If you think about it everything evolves around the Jeep, so nothing is off-topic!

G
Are you saying that people have refused to post here because they don't like people talking about subjects other than Jeeps? That's ludicrous. Say it to yourself, listen to how it sounds.

They can always not read those posts. If you are not going to participate in the Jeep discussions because you don't want to see people talking about non-Jeep subjects then maybe you are the same person who says "This one is better than the other because I said so. There's no real reason, that's just the way it is." (I'm not talking about you Jaffer, obviously you are still here, talking about people who have left already) Personally, that's not the type of JEEP information I'm looking for. I'm looking for diversity of information to help me make an informed decision about the operation of my four wheel drive vehicle. I want all the sides and all the information that I can get my hands on. That's the best information. That's what I'm looking for.

However, if someone can glean new information about life in general from an off topic post, why not? I find it disrespectful that for someone to tell people that you don't want them to post off topic. I find it disrespectful that people's opinions are not respected. I find it disrespectful for someone to leave this BBS because they either don't want to hear off topic posts or don't agree with the subject matter or can't make an educated comment themselves. That makes no sense to me.

I could agree on the snide comments, flames, etc. But you are going to get that whether it's off topic or not. It's just going to happen when you mix backgrounds and personalities from across the country. Ain't nothing gonna stop that.

Actually, Carl, if the Liberal Socialist Democrat party is allowed to remain in control of the government, pretty soon, we'll all have nice little computers in our heads to censor our thoughts so that we can't say anything that might offend someone... /wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif

But anyway, I have learned a ton of stuff on this site (a lot of it is from the off topic posts like the politics, and other things that apply to the environment and how to deal with the wackos who want to close places off from us...). The moderator doesn't seem to have a problem with this off topic stuff (they can see that it's important to a lot of people here, I would assume so it's left alone...) . I agree with not having more than one thread per off topic subject (unless that one thread gets so big that it gets to taking a while to load and then maybe continue it with another one)... /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

I guess I'm just as much to blame with the off-topic stuff as anyone, but, man, no offense at all intended guys, but I don't see how some of you can go thru life that way. /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif You must make yourselves miserable.

A few points:
If you don't think you will like the post, don't read it.
If you don't like guns, don't buy any.
If you don't like cigarettes, don't smoke them.
If you don't like beer, don't drink it.
If you don't like Jeeps don't drive one.
Amercia means Freedom for all, not just for you.
The right to never be offended is not in the Constitution.

....and on and on and on.

Sorry to continue this off-topic thread.
