Our prayers are with Mitch & Rae as they go through the surgery and now the recovery.
I know quite a few people who have undergone that procedure with grate success.
My wife had it done about 24 years ago before they perfected it but it didn't work for her at that time. ( It's been changed since.)
For those who need to lose weight I would highly recommend the ATKINS diet. It's been researched probably more then any eating plan out there and it WORKS.
I have Friends and relatives that are on it including myself and my wife Daughter in law ect.
My daughter in Law has lost over 70 lbs in about 7 months, and I've lost about 12 or more in 1 month.
It's much easier then it used to be as they have all kinds of low carb products out there, bread, snacks breakfast drinks-bars and yes even ice cream.
I ballooned up to over 230 lbs and was never FAT in my life before now. I'm looking forward to a LOT LESS of ME showing up at Zukiemelt!!!

Now the next thing ~~~ How do I roll back the YEARS??????

Let me "weigh-in" on the weigh-in, My wife and I are doing the American Heart Assoc. 3 day diet. and I am down 27 lbs since mid November and we skipped about 3 weeks in that time also. It is quite simple and helps you learn portion control. So just because it is on your plate, you can drop the fork and back away. That is the best leasson to be learned.

I hope all well in the New Year with their Resolutions to make themselves better. And indeed I pray for Mitch. My sister in law had that surgery and it has RADICALLY changed her life as well as the families lifestyle.

Congrads on the weight loss
If it works for you keep it up, as for me though I have this BIG problem with the dropping the fork thing

Th Atkins works so well for so many people because you don't have to "drop the fork" Just stay away from Carbs.
I've tried to lose weight for a long time now and this is the easiest thing I've found!!!!
If any one is interested I suggest you get the paper back book and do it RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!

What was said about portion control is key to losing weight, or controling any other diet issue, but
knowing what your eating is more important.

I have had to deal with high cholestrol (Twice, 12 years ago, and again 2 months ago) and recently,
High BP, and had to cut back on salt intake. Of the 2, salt is the hardest, and that's saying something
since my intake of cholestrol is very low to begin.

What I did, and am doing, (sucsesfully) is made a list of all the things I eat regularly, and like, and got the
nutritional information for those things, INCLUDING learning what portions the values were for. I put it
all into a spreadsheet and looked for those things that are killing me (literally). Some I eliminated out
of my diet. Some I could continue to have in moderation, and some I could increase my intake of.

The result was my being able to cut my salt intake drasticly (and get my BP down 25-30 points on
systolic and 5-10 diastolic in 9 weeks. Not perfect, but much reduced).

I have also cut my caloric intake drasticly and dropped about 12 Lbs in about 9 weeks. If I follow true to
my last round with cholestrol, with another 5 Lb loss, my cholestrol should be below 200 again.

My point is, instead of trying to follow someone else's lifestyle or eating habits, you can build on your own
and still get there.

BTW my doctor was emphatic on one point when I told him what I was doing. It doesn't matter where the
calories come from, what matters is cutting down the calories. It's easier than you think.

I tried the Atkins diet, and while I did lose a fair amount of weight, I started feeling weird and didn't like the peaks and valleys. If I even looked at something with carbs in it I'd gain all the weight back. Now I'm down 25 pounds and slowly inching my way to losing another 20, merely by not eating as much, watching what I eat, and exercising more. I ice skate 8-15 hours a week, XC ski when I can, and have a treadmill in the living room in front of the TV. I haven't been below 200 lbs (I'm 5'11) in over 12 years, so it feels great.

70 pounds is amazing, I hope she keeps up the good work.

I think what's important here is to remember that not every diet works for every person the same. Some have great luck with ones that just didn't work for me, and while some yielded the right results, they came with too many side effects to be worthwhile to me. I don't think of what I'm doing as "dieting" per se, but rather as "management". I still choose what I want to eat and how much, but I do it with more thought than I did before. I also do more, like park as far away as I can in a parking lot and walk to a store, hike and sightsee rather than watch TV, and look at food labels more closely. I still had the customary 5 pounds of food over the holidays, but am now cooking more for flavor than quantity (I make a MEAN Baklava!).

To all those "dieting"...it is what you make it. Dieting doesn't have to be ""Die" with a "T" on the end, but you do have to want it for the pounds to come off.

I am on the Atkins diet. I started on July first and have gone from 320lbs to 242lbs. I am still on the diet and would like to get down to 200lbs. I think that this diet has made me more aware of carbs in all kinds of foods. I will be very careful in the future. I never want to put on that weight again. I have also started back into weight training as well as doing more cardiovascular work and some Yoga (never thought I would do that).

Since February of 2002 I have lost 52 lbs. I was 6'3" 260 pounds. But I didn't look fat really, to myself though I felt huge. I was 185-195 in 1995 when I graduated high school and was highly athletic. I've competed at high levels in both mountain bike racing and mini-triatholons before I put on the weight. It was not being able to be active after a car accident in 1999 that allowed me to put on that weight.

So although I didn't appear it, I was way overweight and if I didn't do something I'd be even heavier now. Of course, I am in a different situation than those needing surgery or drastic diets. What I did and those that have done the same as me all have lost weight. I increased my output and decreased my input (food).

Daily, I started doing push-ups (at home) at least 100 a day no matter how many at a time as long as I hit 100 each day. I swam daily and once I felt my body was decent enough to start again, I went back to running and the gym. I researched training methods that were safe for me, since I tend to over-workout. AS far as my meals. I cut them in half, we all eat too much anyway. But I did eat whatever I wanted, I just didn't go nuts and over-indulge. I did it in steps too, I wanted to be able to keep it off after I lost it and not send my body into "famine shock" or "starvation reaction" where are bodies metabolism slows way down and then effect your brain's chemical levels.

Now almost two years later I am down safely 52lbs. I want to lose 8 more but I am in no rush. It'll be gone before summer because now I am training for the NY marathon. It has always been a distant goal of mine.

The key firstly is setting safe goals and using a system that teaches (more-like conditions) you to eat what your body needs rather than scarf down a bag of chips, just-because.

Oddly though finding I am hypoglycemic (which could have been a result to previous weightloss methods and failures) I eat every hour and a half small portions sometimes just a cracker or two. I even eat right before bed which is usually a no-no.

My methods, which do work for many (commited) isn't for everyone but it has some valid points in it.

Wow, this is all very informative. Many of you here seem to have done a lot of research on the subject, and many of you are to be commended for sticking to your guns and losing that weight.

I fortunately have good genes in that I have always been able to eat anything and as much as I wanted without ever gaining so much as a pound (sorry - I'm not gloating, just leading up to my situation). In my twenties I was always very active. I played sports, worked out and was in phenominal shape. I had a very healthy diet geared towards muscle mass and weight gain coupled with a high-strength work-out program yet still could not gain a pound.

In my late twenties I began developing a form of rheumatoid arthritis and slowly more and more joints became affected. I'm so weak today I probably couldn't bench press 50lbs. Can't run anymore even though I was once one of the fastest sprinters in the province.

And now I'm slowly gaining weight and growing the dreaded potbelly and love handles. In the last five years I have become sedentary, and I have a very poor diet. I know I need to change this pattern.

I don't know much about the Atkins Diet, so I have a couple questions for those of you on it. I understand that it recommends more protein and little carbs in the form of breads and pasta, but how about fruit and vegetables? And is this the diet where you try to eat many small meals a day instead of three large meals, in effect stabilizing your highs and lows?

I also have arthritis, and have trouble moving at times, and whe nit hits, I can go from being normal to not being able to climb stairs in about 30 minutes. I keep my medicine around always, luckily for now it's just Tylenol, but it's starting to lose its effectiveness. I have found the key is to keep active, keep doing something, I find that if I sit around and let it try to pass I almost can't move. When you live alone it can be unnerving. I do worry about the future, as I'm only 35, but advances are being made every day in the field. I used to run a lot, before I went into the military, but lot and never regained the drive when I got out. Now I'm back on track with other items, low impact but just as rigorus, and it keeps me in check (feels good too).

My hates off to all those losing weight, and Larry's right, it does sound like a Bridge meeting. Oh well, hand me some tea and deal...

Glad to hear it's working for you. I could go on for pages about how unhealthy the Atkins diet is though... My g/f just finished her Masters in Nutrition at NCSU and you don't even want get her started going on and on about it... Bottom line is eat healthy, eat reasonable quantities, and exercise regularly. That's the ONLY diet that works every time, and is safe & healthy. Good luck with it,

While I don't claim to be an expert on the Atkins diet (I'v only been on it about5 weeks) and am still reading the BOOK. which is what I highly recommend to any one wanting to do it. You can get in paper back so it isn't to expensive.
But YES you eat vegy's lots of them just NOT the starchy one's or ones with to much sugar in them . The first month your supposed to keep your diet at 20 g. carbs or less then it can be increased if your still losing weight.
AMA and many other studies show that it's NOT the FAT in your diet that makes you FAT it's eating to many CARBS with Fat~protein that is bad for you. Your cholesterol , triglycerides , blood pressure and weight are all supposed to improve !!! As to high and lows you don't relay get them like you used to as it's the Carbs that causes that. As to when to eat Don't skip meals and eat till your comfortably FULL of LOW carb Food!!!!!!!!!
