May 26, one of the Union Pacific's steam locomotives once again passed through our area. My dad, brother and I all took off to follow it. We picked it up about 20 miles south of our town and followed it in getting some good pictures and video. It was on display in our town for about an hour and a half too. Here is a shot of me and the kids.

The original plan was for my dad, brother and I to follow the train for the next 50 miles of its' journey for the day. While getting gas, I got a phone call from a friend asking if we wanted to ride the train. Our day changed to my mom and dad and my kids riding the train while my brother and I followed to take video and pick them up at the end. They got to ride in the top of the dome car.

Here is one more shot I took.

The next day (saturday) my son and I got to ride it from Russellville to Van Buren while my dad dropped us off and picked us up.

I was a bit bummed to notice after downloading the pictures that I had the camera set to 2 star resolution instead of 4 star. That picture could have been so much better.

As a former CRI&P employee, that first picture makes me nervous. Standing that close without even a blue flag.

I hear that this ting caused problems in Van Buren, AR where it was to make a short stop. There was a coal train stopped for a crew change on an adjacent track. Some railfans crawled BETWEEN THE CARS on the coal train to see the 844.

Nice avatar! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

It is great to see the 844 out on the main line; kudos to the UP for keeping the FEF-4 and the 3985 Challenger active. Most eastern Class 1 railroads have put their steam engines in storage after the Norfolk Southern's J-1 611 was involved in a derailment accident some years back. She didn't leave the tracks but some of her passenger cars did.

It is great to see your kids like trains, your family picture reminds me of a time when mine were that age. Take Care and thanks for sharing! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Awesome!
My sister and her husband are in Omaha, and of course that's the UP headquarters.
BTW for anybody on the east coast, especially in NC, the NC transportation museum is a great place to visit.

I'm on a volunteer train crew there, and they run all week during the summer. Unfortunately our steam engine, a 3 truck Shay, is down this summer for more serious repairs, but we'lre hoping to have it back up by next season...
