Equation is as follows

1(good jeep)+1(good dog)+2(good friends)+1(good friend’s son)+2(shotguns)=

10(trees)+6(squirrels taken)+3(squirrels left in woods for next year)+1(heck of a good time)

We hunted for 2 and a half hours on 31Jan the closing day for squirrel season in north Indiana. The squirrels were down and the farm lanes were soft, we were yee haaing all the way.

I like all kinds of hunting but hunting with a dog is my most favorite way to hunt. Squirrel hunting and rabbit hunting seem to be almost opposites in this regard. If you want to get a bunch of bunnies you need a good dog. If you want to get a bunch of tree rats, still hunting with a 22 is the best way to go, leave the dog at home. To get a good rabbit dog $100 to $250 will go a long way. Where as a good squirrel dog will start at $500 and $1500 is not unknown. It costs more to get fewer squirrels. It sounds insane but you either like hunting squirrel with a dog or you don’t. I will not even shoot a squirrel unless the dog trees it. When I rabbit hunt I don’t really like jump shooting them I like to have the dog bring them around and have a good race.
