Unfortunately, things happened beyond my control that are forcing me to back out of a deal I made for an item off Ebay. The seller says that he needs $64 to cover "listing charges". I am assuming these charges are for putting on Ebay...yes or no? And if so, what determines the amount the charges are? I know a lot of you guys sell things on there and since I have never messed with it, I just wanted to get your opinions before I sent the money. I don't really have any reason to doubt the seller, he seems to be legit, but I just want to make sure. Thanks for the help.

Yeah. Ebay charges sellers a certain percentage based on intital opening bid, what the item closed at, and all the nifty pictures, gallery items and what not. If it was a vehicle I am sure that the price is around that much. why don't you ask the seller to see if he can contact the SECOND highest bidder and work out a deal. I've had bidders back out on me before and that is what I did.

$1050 was the opening and closing price, I was the only bidder, and it was a nice advertisement for the part with 3 large pictures. So $64 is probably pretty accurate huh? Okay, thanks guys. It's on the way this evening. Boy I hate passing this up.
By the way, the seller is a performance shop, so I don't think he will have much of a problem selling it. And, if any of you are interested in a BRAND NEW complete 4.3 Chevy V6 engine with ZERO MILES on it, let me know and I will send you all the info.

This is true though, but from a sellers stand point it kind of sucks still. Last time I had to do that It took ebay almost a month to credit me and I had to lay out the money in advance because I got my bill before the credit took effect. Plus the chance of getting a negative feedback would not be good at all. Maybe the guy could work with you and meet him half way at 30 something dollars...this way everyone is happy:)

Stretch:

I sell a lot of low-priced items on eBay and consider the cost of using eBay just that. Costs that I am responsible for. Therefore, I figure that I will cover the costs from the proceeds of the sale. eBay DOES have a system set up in auctions that let you add on the costs of shipping at the end of the auction, but no mechanism to do the same for the costs to list on eBay.

So, I would do what another poster suggested: Ask him to deal with the next-highest bidder if he wants to add the eBay charges. Most likely he'll drop the charges if the bid difference is significantly higher than the cost of the auction.

If you just want to back out of the deal because you can't afford it or you have lost interest, then you risk getting negative feedback, which is NOT GOOD! Lots of people will not deal with someone who has ANY negative feedback. Others will deal if you have a great majority of positive feedback and maybe one or two negatives.

Be careful in your choice.

Thanks for the advice everyone. I feel terrible about having to back of this in the first place... 1) because it is really what I have been looking for, and 2) because I feel like I am breaking a promise to the guy. So, I think I will send him the $64 and keep him happy...maybe he won't give me a bad ebay rap and when I get back on my feet and come knockin' at his door again, he won't be hesitant to work with me if need something else from him. Who knows...maybe he will still have my engine for me later. I just hate to give up $64 dollars and have nothing to show for it.

Thanks again.

Let's look at it this way...

If you were the only bidder and the beginning and ending price were the same, then you didn't discourage anyone else from buying it. Also, if YOU hadn't bid on it, he would have had to relist it, which he could have, and not paid any money. BUT, go over the price list because he only gets a certain portion of that back for re-listing it for free. I don't think the "bold" and additional charges are refunded, only the base listing fee. Therefore, I would pay only those costs.

Also, ask him if he's still going to give you negative feedback. If so, I wouldn't bother sending him any money as it won't do anything for you.

Granted you bid on an auction and should pay, but cannot. As a lister on Ebay (and I list a LOT as well), I have run into that and can sympathize with people's problems. I have not left negative feedback in such cases, but I have where people have bid and then ditched, never to be heard from again.

So, if they're willing to work with you, then I'd try to work it out, because you don't want negative feedback.

YOU BID....YOU PAY.You entered into a legaly binding contract when you bid!No pays are the biggest problem on Ebay. You should think about if you can pay for it BEFORE you bid.It cost money to place the item up for auction and a bunch more when someone has a winning bid on it and they bill it to MY credit card if I collect those finds or not.

Whoa! easy now... Stretch said: "Unfortunately, things happened beyond my control that are forcing me to back out of a deal... I just wanted to get your opinions before I sent the money."
At least he's working with the guy. Things happen, and Ebay does have a bid retraction clause in certain circumstances, and most people can be understanding if they know the situation. I, for one, give Kudos to Stretch for covering the seller's expenses involved. The item can be re-listed, not like it's something that nobody wants.

Thanks for backing me Scott...

Porscefixer - I wasn't intending not to give the guy what he was asking for, but just asking the EBAY veterans on this list if $64 sounded like a fair amount of cash.
When I bid on the item, the Military had just given me a descent re-enlistment bonus. After I had already sent payment to the seller, I was informed that the amount the Military gave me was incorrect and turned out to be only half the original amount and I had to pay half of it back. Luckily, the payment was returned to me for insufficient address information or I probably would have had an engine sitting at the house and not be able to put any food on the table for my family...fate I guess.
The seller has been more than understanding through all of this and I intend to give him the good feedback he deserves and the $64 dollars went out this morning, if for no other reason, for all of the trouble I caused him.
