Just curious if anyone is planning on looking at the Challenger as it makes it's trip from Wyoming to the Superbowl in Houston. It will be stopping overnight on it's return trip at Little Rock and I'll be there for sure. I might follow it part way to Fort Smith too. I've seen it the last 2 times it's been through here and it is a treat to see.

Not my picture.

I believe it's one of the largest and most powerful locomotives ever made, with the "Big Boy" being the largest. I have a picture of myself standing in front of Big Boy at age 6. It was massive then, and massive now.

Do we have some rail fans and/or model railroaders on the board?

I probably wouldn't be too interested in steam, but if it came close enough, I might be interested. What's the route? Hope it's not running over any ex-Rock Island track, it wouldn't make it. We had enough trouble with SD40-2s and U30Cs.

I have a friend that claims that there are cab forwards that were larger that the Big-Boys.

Now, if one of these ever runs again, I'm there.

Yup, see the picture below of my parent's basement. DCC has made the wiring so simple and the opperation so much better.

In my first post I posted a link of the schedule and the route map. It is going back through Kansas City so it will be close to you.

Doh, missed those links under the picture.

Looks like it already came through here once. I don't know how I missed that. I'm in KC on the Kansas side about two miles north of the tracks from KC to Topeka. Some nights I can hear the coal trains even in the winter with the windows closed.

I'll try to remember to catch it on the way back. Looks like it's going to be at Union Station for a full day +.

Link to some streamliners.

It's in a yard in St. Louis now. It made a scheduled stop in a suburb last week, and they discovered a problem, so it's being repaired here. I think it will be here for a few more days, but I haven't had time to see it.

On the radio they were reporting that it's the largest steam engine still running. BTW I think there is a Big Boy at the National Transportation Museum here. At least they do have an articulated engine. Huge doesn't begin to describe it.

The challenger should have left Houston this morning to begin its return trip to Cheyenne. I'm looking forward to seeing and hearing it on Friday.

1. Though I'm not a RR modeler,
2. I'm enamored by Trains!
3. Here's a picture of my Grandpa,
4. And his crew..
5. He was an Engineer, on
6. The Denver and Rio Grande RR.
7. The picture was taken,
8. In the Late 1920's, or early 1930's.
9. I've been trying to ID the locomotive.
10. Anyone have any ideas on it?

Here's a little to start with from my dad:

It's a consolidation. Note the headlight. I would place it closer to
1900 because of the headlight. However, the piston valve places it
later. The Western Pacific inherited a few consolidations from D&RGW
since they were the parent company around 1906. Both railroads were big
into 2-8-0's and 4-6-0's (ten wheeler).

In going from that info, it looks to me that it is an ALCO class C-48 ordered between 1906 and 1924 and numbered in the 1131-1199 number series.

Here's a picture of 1136.

2. Now if I can find a picture of one,
3. In Helper UT....
4. They hauled a lot of coal out of Carbon County,
5. And I suspect he was on a coal run...
6. I think you're right on the date,
7. In looking close...
8. It could be around WWI

FYI, the Challenger is in Kansas City today then crossing Kansas and Nebraska the next two days. I spent a couple hours Friday following it and got some great video.
