Has anyone done the Nutter ignition bypass on a 82 - 86 258CI motor?
I'm looking for possible gotchas and tips.
Thanks

I did the Nutter on my 88YJ and the only glitch I found is that the orange ignition wire that you cut at the firewall where it enters the computer is NOT orange when it comes out. It comes out of the firewall as a light green w/a black stripe. Also, if you tap into the purple (violet) wire with a spade terminal tap as I did, make sure your splice goes all the way thru the insulation to the wire for a good connection. Other than that, I installed spade terminals on EVERY wire I cut in case I had to reconnect everything in the future. Started up first time, but I didn't notice much change because when I was taking stuff out to prepare for the Weber (work in progress), I found out that most of my vacuum tubes were hooked up wrong which probably caused the Carter to run like crap.

I suggest you-all go to the partsmike.com forum, and scroll down to a post started on 10-28-99, by DaveCJ8, titled Computerless 83-86 CJs. Read some of the last few posts, that go through about 11-1. In my opinion, the 'by-pass' idea ought to be approached with your eyes open.
Best wishes.

There is nothing in any of those posts that would lead me to a different decision about the Nutter. My 88YJ has only 38,000 original miles, and I have had nothing but trouble from the BBD/Computer. The Nutter is free and easily reversed if you attach spade terminals to the wires you cut. If the "full rich" position bothers you, you can warm the engine, shut it off, start it again, and if you disconnect the stepper within 15 seconds of the second startup, and the metering pins will be in the neutral position. Barring any other pre-existing problems, the Nutter should be a godsend.

I agree, I've done my homework and am ready to do the Nutter bypass. It's not that big a deal and it's completely reversible.
