The donor NP205 (SM465/NP205) in my truck is falling out of gear when I drive the truck down the road. It tends to want to shift on it's own from 2HI into Neutral and from 4HI into 2HI. It doesn't make the shift completely, just enough to make the nasty gear clash grind. When I drive the truck, I have to keep my right hand on the t/c shifter to keep it from doing this.

Is there any kind of adjustment that can be made to tighten things up on the shifter to keep it from 'autoshifting'? If not, what's the remedy for this problem?

Thanks

Maybe the detent balls are missing or worn out, or the springs that load them against the shift rails are broken or missing? There are threaded caps on the top of the case that hold in the springs and detent balls. Not sure if you can access the top of the case with the case in the truck. Otherwise, your shift rails may just plain be worn out :-(

Can I get at this stuff by removing the tunnel cover on the floor? It goes from the firewall to the front of the seat and I can see the shifter linkage and front of the T-case with it off.

How hard would it be to fix this stuff if it's really the problem? How can I trouble shoot it? I can't really drive the truck right now without using a rubber bungie to hold the stick in place.

Yes, you should be able to get to it by removing the hump.

/wwwthreads_images/icons/tongue.gif About an hour ago I just finished painting our SM465/NP205 boxes to get them ready to install tomorrow. Both boxes had a "freshening up", which includes the detent kits for the shift rails in both the 465 and the 205. The 205 uses a "pill" for the detent, and a spring to push it. The detent plugs are visible from the top when the floor pan segment is removed. What a crapload of bearings those two combined boxes have. I think there was eleven total.....maybe twelve./wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif
