I am taking these P.O.S'es off(the flares is what I meant!) Mine have about had it and make it look real crappy, me and my dad are about to paint it a yellow-orange, My question is: Are they welded to the body or is it just a simple(not simple getting the factory bolting loose!) bolt-off operation or should I let a profesional do it??

The ABS plastic flares are screwed to a metal mounting surface that is spot welded to the side of the Samurai. I hope this makes sence. The metal part can be removed without damaging the side of your Samurai if extreme caution is used. Personally I would leave the metal flasre on and find a set of plastic flares in better condition.

I assume your talking about the little metal flare that the plastic flare mounts onto, there spot welded to the body.
If your running an 89 (or was it 88.5?) then the flares themself are steel, dont know what to do about thoes.

If you're careful, you can remove the metal flare thingie without doing any damage to the body. Just use a drill bit designed for drilling out spot welds. I removed my flares a few months ago..... I like it!/wwwthreads_images/icons/smile.gif

HEY CSR,

I like the "No Flare" look. I also like the shortened running boards. I was looking at mine and thinking about doing the same thing but I have floor behind there. How'd you clear enough room to get the nerf bars up there? Can you send some good pics of that area?

Hey Capn,

Thanks! My nerfs are made from 2"x3" tubing. I had to tilt them up at a 45* angle to clear the floor. I got happy with the sawzall and removed more dented rocker sheetmetal than I should have/wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif.... and had a hard time trying to cover up the mess. The batteries are dead in my digital camera, but I found this picture in my files that shows a little more detail. I was trial fitting the nerfs before I capped the ends and painted them.

I yanked off my flares with a hand grinder. You have to be careful not to burn thru to the fenders. After two or three you get the hang of it. Mine were in terrible shape too, but I am still lookin for the right ones to replace them. You really start to miss those flares when you do some serious mudding. I run 33X12.5's and I commonly come out as muddy as the rest of the zook. I don't want stock, and I don't want wrangler flares (everyone has those). I think I would like the fender flares that come on a late 80's model Dodge duelie truck. Ya know those little rubber flares that stick off of the fiberglass rear housings?

Well there is something I have seen that sounds corny but looks sweet!...THE NEW BUG FLARES! If I really got lonesome from not having flares this is what I would probably up-grade to.

My seats are out of a '95 Hyundai Accent. I did a installation article for http://IZOOK.com.... look for it in the technical section. They weren't as easy to install in a Zuk as some other makes of seats are, but they sit great and look like they belong in there.

When i took my flares off i jus drilled the spot welds out. I drilled right thru the body too. But in my case, its ugly and aint gonna get any better so who cares.

If you use a spot weld removal bit the removal should be no problem.

I'm removing my flares also. I went to Sears and asked for a "spot weld removal bit" and the guy looked at me like I was a nut. He had no idea what that was, and after searching the drill bit/cutting section, I gave up. Does it have another name, or what does it look like? Thanks

You will probably have to go to an auto parts store to find one. I believe Eastwood catalog carries them. I bought one in the Mid-West chain store, O'Reileys. If you're still having hard luck, try a store that specializes in auto paints/restoration supplies.

A grinder works just as good as the drill bit and is alot easier to find, and works a hell of alot quicker. Plus you will need the grinder to fix all the crap that has probably gotten between the panels and the flares.

I finally got them all off today! Well if you can get those screws off I will be impressed!!!! I had to drill through all of them But it is cool since it makes it look sweeter and wider.

P.S. Expect some dirt/rust/grime under there!

I found a spot weld bitat my local NAPA store. The guy knew just exactly what I was talking about. Used it last night. Works great, just got to be careful not to drill too far and add some extra holes in the side! /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif Got the passengers side flare off. Ouch! hidden cancer! ...Well, I guess I knew it was there. Time for some custom work....
