The IFS in a 2500HD is heavier than a 1500. Like mine, mine is the bigger of the 2, has a larger ring gear and a little beefier everything else. Still wouldn't trust big tires on it though.

Personally, with all the diesels we have owned, I think the only auto trans I would ever consider behind a good diesel would be the alison. Other than that I would only get a manual. We have a 99 dodge 1 ton with Cummins and the tranny bubbles it's fluid out the top every other week or so. The 4l80e and TH400's we had behind our GM's didn't last at all. Well, these trucks are tow rigs that haul alot of weight everyday. If it's just a truck to drive around in all day and mabye pull a small boat to the lake or something I wouldn't worry too much.

So the occasional offroad will be better than the 1/2 ton. Yeah, I heard that most auto's are horrible behind diesels. I was told that the allison is based after the "school bus" tranny, and the way they drive those and all the stop and go, they are extremely reliable. and that if it detects a slip the trans will shift down and unlock the converter. I have 2 trucks and a car with sticks,, I want an everyday automatic, kick on the air and go and get up to 20mpg and over 200000 miles, this will be the first new anything i buy (never wanted to take "the hit"), so i want to do it right, with the 3/4 is it safe to torsion it up about 2 inches and run a 305 on it?

Probably not 305/70R16's (33x12R16), just too wide. Some good 285/75R16's (33x11.25R16) would work, and a 255/85R16 (33x10R16, but a good 1/2 taller than either of the other two) would work too.

Skip the torsion bar cranking unless it's like 1/2" or less. To much trouble with to many risks.
