Ok, I have been reading this group for awhile and I have never saw this question, so I will ask.

I just got the Jeep :-} its a 76 CJ5 with a 258. I have looked up the model and year on off-road.com and they have the 4 speed tranny listed with the quadra trac as the transfer case. Since I can not find the numbers how can I tell if it is a T-18 or T-18a or not. I can do about 10 miles an hour in first gear in 2hi but that is all I would dare to take it. It seems that it does better taking off from 2nd.

When I first looked at it and the owner said it had the Quadra trac transfer case, but I have not found any numbers on it yet. But the lever for the transfer case has 2hi 4hi and 4lo, I did not think the quadra trac came with those options. According to the Quadra Trac catalog it looks like a dana 20 shift lever.

The hubs up front are selectro hubs, Did these come with the quadra trac or do I have a different case. I hope I have asked the questions correctly if not please forgive me I am new to a Jeep but not to off roading.

Thanks

I am not very familiar with quadratrac but from what you've described it sounds like you have a t18 with a dana 20 transfer case.
I believe that the quadratract only came behind automatics. There are plenty of other guys on this forum that know the in's and out's
of the quadratrac. Hope that helps a little.

Once more thing...if you think you have a t18 then on the left side of the case you should have either a 13-01 or T18 cast into the
case itself.

Quadratrac (which is what you don't have) never had that type of shifter. If it had a hi/lo adapter the little shifter was mounted on
the floor next to the drivers seat. They also had a lockup switch in the glove box.

first i think you mean the quadra tech catalog. the quadra trac was never offered in the cj5's either. your transfer case, if original, is a dana 20. someone else will have to answer the transmission question though.

if you have a 4 speed in a 76 and it is stock, it is most deffinatly a T18, but the transfer case is probablly a dana 20, not the quadratrac...the quadratrac only with the automatics in cj's and if you have a cj-5 there was no auto option. I belive some J trucks and cherokees came with the t18 and the quadratrac but that would be from mid to late 70's.

Also, if it's a quadratrac, the rear diffy will be off-center.
