I installed a set of waggy springs in the rear of my YJ. I'm having one problem, then shackle now hits the rear crossmember. My plan is to make a boomerang type shackle, but I'm having some trouble figuring out what angle to make it at. Any opinions? I've made about 10 templates on paper so far. I'm also concerned if the spring will hit the frame at full compression, so I'm contemplating adding an inch or so to the shackle. What are everyone's opinions? Thanks.

Re: New waggy springs, question on shackle

Boomerang's should do the trick. Don't make them symmetrical (with the bend in the middle) but rather the top "leg" longer than the bottom. Take the angle the shackle sits at now and divide it in half. Take half the distance from the bottom of the frame-rail to the center of the lower shackle-bolt and allow the "legs" of the boomerang to connect there. Make another template and see how it looks.

Your using SJ front springs to gain an extra 2" wheelbase and some lift, correct? The differential doesn't smack the gas-tank this way? Would it hit if the springs were SUA?

I don't have experience to give you an opinion on the correct shackle angle, but I sure do have experience with that type of band aid!

I'd say you made a good choice of cost vs. performance and should get plenty of good life from a bandage like that.

Measure the length of that spring following its arc from shackle bolt to shackle bolt. This will give you the flat length of the spring. Now measure from the front shackle bolt back, the distance of the spring length. You will now know the furthest point back that the shackle will be at. You should easily see how much dogleg you will need to clear the frame.

Re: New waggy springs, question on shackle

Here's the shackle I ended up making. It's a bit overkill, but I needed to build something so I could flex it without hitting the rear crossmember. We'll see how this works, and maybe redo them if I'm not happy.
