Well, I'm new to this message board. I just got my frist 4x4 today and I have some questions. I got a 84 jimmy with a 305. What are the frist steps to makeing this rig get through nice mud holes. Money is an issue, but I don't want to do things real cheaply. What are some opinons on what my frist mod should be? Don't forget I'm new to this sport, but can't wait to get started. Thanks...

got some more stats? My guess is it has a 700R4 with a NP208 and a pair of 10 bolts. Any lift or M/T tires? In my experience I would put a 14FF rear end in it to prevent breakeage. Probably get a 3/4 ton dana 44 front to start out with also to have matching gears and 8 lug. Get some 15x8 8-lug wheels (I think about $50 each) and run your current tires if thay are good. Is the 305 any good? Might think of getting a 350 or something too. The first thing I broke on my truck was the 10 bolt rear and out in the mud spinning them hard doesn't help any

Man, I'm going crazy I just went to pick it up an hour ago, now I have to sit up here at work for 2 more hours. How can you tell what kind of rear end it has? What's good and what's not. Like I said I'm new to this. I know some about sport cars, but stop that stuff in high school.

305 which has 148,000 miles, but seems to be in good shape, 4 wheel drive works.
I just spent $1,300 he was asking $2,000. In my opinon I got a good deal. I got it to be sorta a toy.

mnorby is getting a little aggressive here real quick. I'd recommend to first make sure everything on the truck is safe, get it tuned up, replace any worn tie rod ends, ball joints, ujoints and the like, get a good set of mud tires in 33", trim a little bit off the inside corners of the front fenders to avoid any tire rub, then go have fun. 33s won't kill the axles you have now, and you'll have a nice safe truck that's still easy to handle on the streets. Save the lifts and axle swaps and stuff until you get more into the sport or break what you have now.

It's easy if you have a sawzall! When you get closer to doing it let us know and we can tell you exactly where to cut it. You might check into the GM SFA forum too, go to the main page and scroll down. That is a forum that is specifically meant for trucks of your vintage.
