Good day to you all,
Friends!! Countrymen!!! Scout II owners!!! Lend me your ears!! And your knowledge!!! Haha
Ok. I'm about to acquire a '79 SII from a family member. It's been in the family for about 23yrs. Body has over 100k miles on it. Engine has about 20-30k, but needs another overhaul, as does the tranny. It will need a new rear window, possibly a new hardtop all together. Interior needs overhauling as well. I want to do a frame-up restoration and make it my son's first vehicle when he's old enough to drive (He's 9 now. I think I've got time. Haha)
So where do I start? I'll assume mechanical maintenance would be primary concern. It can look pretty, but if it doesn't run it's worthless. What's the cost difference between overhauling the current engine or just buying a new crate engine and tranny? I'll be on a fairly low budget so a LOT of this will be me doing the fixing, and getting my sone involved so he has a personal investment and treats it right. Or I'll be getting friends involved and paying in beer and food. Haha
First thing I'll do is break it down and start inventorying what's broken and what keepable/restorable. For a DIY'er, what are some of the basic tolls I'll need? Engine crane? Sand blaster? Ring pullers? What tools would be easier to rent as opposed to buying?
Any initial assistance will be greatly appreciated. I will start posting pics once I get the Scout so we all can see the "re-birth" of this gem. Thank you all in advance!!!
