Every time I start the jeepster I get a rattling noise from underneath. While driving or holding at higher rpm's its quiet, but at idle its there. I haven't narrowed it down yet but it sounds like someone shaking a can with rocks in it. I'm afraid its the torque converter going. Any ideas? I have the 225 with th400 tranny. All fluids in the tranny and t-case are good. Thanx.

Noooooo --- Sounds like the flex plate's cracked, not fun. It cracks usually right around the crank's bolt holes.
But before performing surgery, crawl underneath and look, make sure it's not something else, like a loose exhaust bracket, heat shield, or whatever.
Hopefully it's something simple.
If it is the flex plate, it will get worse fast.

When my buddies flex pate cracked on his 73 it just howled at higher speeds. Loud too, you could hear it over the 304 with side exit glasspacks. Listen to Rrich, it can be something way too simple, I thought my motor was going south on me going down the freeway, turned out to be the front wheel bearings. Replaced the whole electrical harness, then found out it was a missing fuse giving me all the trouble. Just check the simple stuff, how about going down the road in 4 wheel drive, hear the noise, shift t-case into neutral, turn off the motor, and see if the noise is still there.

sometimes something vibrates at only a certain frequency so that at idle it makes noise and at higher speeds the vibration isn't right to make it rumble. I would definitely check out under the rig to eliminate any small possibilities. Could be something against the body too? The driveshaft fell off my CJ-7 at the front transfer case and used to vibrate on the skid plate. I thought my tranny was coming loose or something...I crawled under, relaized the above and took care of it in about five minutes.

Well heres what I found out today. Got home from work, crawled under the Jeepster, wiggled this, wiggled that, couldn't find anything. Ok ... it made noise only when running, only during idle. Got in the jeep, started it up with buddy listening, and ... NOTHING. No noise at all. Took it for a long ride, starting and stopping. Shut it off, started it up. nothing! Now I'm confused as hell. Gonna have to wait to see if it comes back again. I hate intermittent problems! I did have a bad front output seal on the t-case the other day. I took off the front driveshaft fron the t-case and the yoke nut on the t-case was pretty loose. I made sure it was tight after changing the seal and thought it was the problem, but when I started it up it was still there. Thats why I posted this last night. Oh well! I'll wait and see what happens.(hopefully nothing - knocking on wood)

Hopefully the "wiggling this" or maybe it was the "wiggling that" that left whatever it was in a different place where doesn't hit whatever it was hitting.

If it was the flex plate, just pick out the worst time and place you could be for it to let loose - it'll do it there.
