Does anyone know what all needs to be done to put a 258 out of a 1974 jeep into a 1985 jeep. Are they the same engine? mine blew up and i found one from a local that was out of his 1974 and had it rebuilt. Thanks for your help.
I'm just assuming that the computer ouy of the 85 will not be used? Since the intake and exhaust manifolds are different does that mean that my old one's won't bolt on to the 74 motor? Sorry about all the questions. If i use the distributer and stuff off my old motor can i use the same ignition system that is currently in the 85?
I really appreciate your help.
Does your state have emmissions testing? If so, then you will need to keep all of your top end stuff the same...intake, carb, dist, vacuum hoses, etc. If the block and head are the same then you will most likly be ok.
No i dont have to worry about emmissions testing. So it sounds like i can use my intake, dist etc. How about a hei dist. change over. There can't be that much difference between the two engines. But what do i know, thats why i am asking the experts
Search HEI and maybe google it. Basically you need a six cylinder HEI from a late seventies early eighties GM straight six. Replace the bottom dist gear with one for an AMC V8 (304, 360, 401), and get a set of plug wires for Ford PU with fuel injected straight six. I did this swap and with the MC2100 my jeep purrrs like a kitten and will even growl a little if I tell her to.
PS: You might elaborate a little on your profile. Knowing a bit more about you and your Jeep can help the others here steer you in the right direction better in the future.
