i recently bought a 87 wrangler with a 4.2 sraight six. its leaking oil every where. so i might try and put a new engine in it. is there any other engines besides the 4.2 that will work with it?

Please fill out your profile.

That is the only direct swap.
You could swap in engines.
4.0L, 304, 360, 401 all will bolt to your bellhousing. Just have to make mounts and hook all the other stuff up like radiator hoses, fuel lines, electrical.

Please read the post at the top of the page.

Now to answer your question, the 4.0 and any AMC V8 will bolt to the tranny. That does not make it a wise decision.

Why not look for another 258? I found one that was in "granny's" 88 concorde wagon with 48k on it. That would be the cheapest way to go as far as an engine swap.

But anything can be done if the pocket is deep enough and the hands/knowledge is there.

I would sugest that you do not invest in just a new engine. The transmission in the 87 and 88 YJ's is the worst in the world and the most expensive to fix when they break.

Find a motor and transmission from a later model and change both. Your only problem may be the input shaft to the NP231.

How is the engine otherwise?

Seals and gaskets are inexpensive and can be done over a Saturday.

The manual used '87 '88 and some '89 is weak. The auto is good.
87 YJ used NP-207 t/c. Seems people don't like these but I don't know much either way about them other than that they are similar to NP-231 and have same input spline counts and a higher low range.

oil leaks are very common.

you should have a leaky valve cover, A leaky rear main seal and a leak at the oil pressure sending unit???? just a guess.....

if it runs OK and is not pushing blue smoke out the tail pipe. you should just fix the oil leaks.

its not blowin blue smoke. but it looks like it is all mainly coming out the rear main seal. i think it has a different engine in it, becaus the oil filter that the book says it should have is not even close to the size on it. but it is definitly a sraight six.

Yeah but I know for sure that there is a large and small (long and short, however you want to say it) that will fit.
