My brother test drove a truck today and brought it by so I could take a look. It was a 2000 or 2001 Gmc truck ,maybe half-ton 1500 but I wasn't paying attention because the engine ID was distracting me.On the throttle body it indicated "vortec" -of course ,,but under the hood was a sticker that said 5.3 liter!!? Is this a new production engine? Or did they bring back the chevy 307?? It was a pretty torguey engine though.

just a couple years behind are ya?/wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif Just kidding man, those engines have been around since 99 as well as 2 other new engines, the 4.8L and the 6.0L. All are very good engines are put out more HP and Torque than there older Vortecs did.

the next six cylinder that will end up replacing the 4.3Ls is a pretty crazy piece of work. Its a inline 6 4.2L. Nice power feel and very very quiet (almost creepy quiet for a gm truck) I checked it out in the trailblazer. Also got a sneak peek at the voltage system all vehicles will be going to in the next few years (complete by 2008) We will have 48 volt systems instead of what we now call 12 volt.

interesting future

Guess I 'am behind. Did GM get bought out by some one? (I didn't hear anything) Is that why they're throwing new numbers in on the engines?

What 48 volts? That would frick everything up like car audio and most anything that is plug in on a truck right? That inline 6 is sweet 275 hp over a measly 220 by the 4.3 vortecs. Kinda sad on how low the trail blazer sits. They should through that 6 in a small blazer.

Just one note about the 5.3L. My friend has a 2000 Tahoe with the 5.3 and I have a 98 Tahoe with the 5.7L. He had (I say had cause I've added a few things to mine) more HP than me. A stock 5.3L has more HP but less torque compared to a 5.7L. I'm interested in the torque not HP.

On all the new engines the HP/Torque ratings are at much higher RPMS than the old engines were which isn't were us 4x4 guys want the power...good for the street guys but not the best for turning big meats!!!

With all the tech they study they could've just configured the traditional 350 to push the higher HP/Torgue at the high rpm rate. Kind of like the Buick 3.8 liter 231 c.
It had moderate HP in it's early stages but now you can find them in the late monte carlos pushing at 225 hp. At least thats what I read somewhere (motor trend) or something.

I can't believe some of you are just finding out about the straight six, I have known about that for over a year. That engine has been featured in tons of magazines so far. Torque and horse monsters! I can't wait to get my hands on something with one.

Considering General Motors is the largest auto maker in the world.....no, they didn't get bought out. Technology makes improvements, so things change.

MY boss has got the 5.3 and ya it does make its power up high, but thats not bad, atleast for towing and road driving. that truck while pulling his 4place inclosed snowmobile trailer never skipped a beat up through the windy mtn roads, the tack was over 3grand most of the way, but thats how its suposed to run.
It may not do aswell crwaling down a trail where it cnat be opend up alittle.

gmc350. 1 battery actually rated higher then 48 volts (50) just like our batterys now say 12 but really closer to 12.5). I will try and scan in a article on it and post it tommorow. they were saying how vehicles are drawing some much now with (gps systems, electric seats(movement, heating, massaging, etc.), and all the electrical sensors on board) that this should have been started years ago. If you think about how long ago it was when we switched from 6 volt to 12 volt, and we use much more electrical equiptment in our vehicles now.

Yeah I still like the feel of ---frame, body, engine ,exhaust and that's about it. Now adays you get the computerized engine, dash climate controls, airbags etc,,etc,,etc, I'm not bashing on them though.

I guess I just have a thing for good 'ol American vintage

The older cars just didn't need air bags because they were built solid metal. The whole car was like a solid roll cage. My father had a '69 road runner,383 nice fast muscle car off the factory, also had an early '70s charger. One year when I was a kid my father was driving with myself in the passenger seat when a newer little honda or some other little car was turning left and didn't yeild,,,drove right into our path.We broadsided him at about 35. I was a little shook up,my father was ok ,,the Charger was ok with the front bumper/grille a little warped and the other car was all smashed in.
