After busting my butt on doing code instead of working on my Jeepster, we now have a much improved home page at:
http://www.off-road.com/jeepster

Make sure you hit refresh to see the new frames and menu. If you have any problems, please post them here so I can fix them.

Expect to see more changes coming soon (yes, I'm not traveling as much now).

Thanks, Mike Childs

Everything worked for me, but I have a few bones to pick on the Members only stuff. THe classifieds. Modify that so only members can post and all can veiw, that is fair, if members are to pay a fee then they should be able to show thier parts to everyone, not just members. Secondly the parts sources? Lets let everyone gain from that, if they can find a bunch of free info on the AJC homepage the more likley they will want to join up. Thirdly, we better all get a chance to join up proper before all this password protection goes into affect. I pretty much have all the contacts I need to find answer I may have about Jeepsters, but I enjoy helping other people and offering what info I do have, so I would like to stay on the BBS, along with many others, so that is why I bring that up. Otherwise, looks good, I like having the option of having the menu right beside the BBS or whatever else I may have pulled up.

Looks terrible. Unorganized, more complex than the original and it takes something simple and makes it complex when it was already okay. Just proves "If it ain't broke -- Don't fix it." Thank you for taking the time and trouble to do the coding, but maybe consider it an exercise in web design that didn't quite work out.

Mine is the same as RRich-

I do have a question-Members only/bulletin boards/Will all the bulletin boards be open to the members of the AJC?For example, can I visit the early Bronco threads etc. Will OFF-Road.com be password protected also?

I do however appreciate the work you have done.

It looks nice, but I had the same problem with the menu being superimposed over the Jeepster logo. Maybe if the text color were some other color than black it would be easier to read, even if it is over the logo. Wait - I just looked at it again and now it works just fine. Go figure.

When I saw the Jeepster of the month I was hoping that it would be a writeup on the Jeepster, even if it was only the specs on it. I know that would be more work, but if the owner wrote that up himself maybe it would be a simple matter of changing his text to html.

Thanks for all your work Mike.

Mike,
First off, thanks for the hard work you put in.
Second, I don't like it (sorry)
The left side menu is confusing and not very easy to navigate with the vague categories. Until the AJC starts collecting money again, I think the ONLY in member section should be removed. Its kinda manacing. I like the featured rig idea, but I think the old front page format was better.

Once again, thank for your time and effort--No offese intended!

I agree, a little tough to see what it says on the left hand side behind the logo. Although yesterday when I checked there was no logo. Also when I click on part #'s nothing happens. The other links worked for me though.

Does the Club Main Menu always stay on the left side?
My screen for the forum is all jammed up on the right side. If this is the way it is going to look I will have to vote on the old layout. If I can get rid of the menu on the left someone tell me how.

Thanks, Chris

Mike-
Video resolution on mine is 1024x768 and it has the same superimposed problem.
All of my comments about layout and navigation problems with the site have already been stated, but I think that most of those would be cleared up if I could actually see what the sub-menus are behind the logo. Also (personal preference) I don't like scroll-y frames if there is no where to scroll--I'll have to check it out at home on a real 'puter instead of the glorified paperweight of a Mac I have at work.

Thanks for all of the work-

I like the new format fine. I didn't like the new BBB until after I used it for a while. So I think that people will get used to it. Hopefully anyway.

One thing I did notice is that the overlay problem happens only when I resize the left side window. Otherwise it works fine. Could this have anything to do with the size of different people's monitors? Maybe to much information to squeeze into smaller screens? This doesn't sound right but I thought I'd throw it up there anyway.

I to would like to be able to send my money in for dues. I'm not much for keeping information from anyone just because they aren't "members". But that's just me, I understand both sides of the issue.

Anyway, I appreciate all those that go out of their way to provide something of value to those that either don't know how or don't have time to spend on it. Not only do I not know how this computer stuff works, I certainly don't have the time for it. So thanks Mike and anyone else out there who are workin' for us Jeepster owners.

Mike it is a good stab at a page upgrade. My comments would fall in line with kgstahl's.

Left frame is only a problem if I resize it. Right frame requires scrolling which is a hassle. Try designing for a 14" monitor - this may help others who are having overlay problems. Menu structure is a little confusing, but I found everything I was looking for after a little hunting.

Before you switch to a member's only format please let me mail in some $$ so I can continue to take advantage of everything on the site.

Thanks for all the hard work. Change is not such a bad thing.

I like the new format. I found that if you grab the boundry between the side bar and main window and collapse the side bar, it forces it into an outline mode and is easier to read and go where you want. The only thing that I don't like is that if you are on the Bulletin board and try to reload to refresh the screen and import any new messages, it kicks you out of BBS and back to the home screen. It ends up taking a lot longer to refresh the bulletin board than in the old format.

I am glad that someone has the skill and energy to work on this site. I am sure the end product will be great. BUT, I am one of those who sent in an application and check to become a dues paying member of the AJC only to have my check returned with the understanding that the club was basically in limbo. I haven't seen anything else concerning membership until now. Please let those of us who wish to be members an opportunity to join. Let me know what I need to do. This site has proved invaluable to me and I do not want to be locked out of any portion. Thanks, William Barnett (wbarnett@meta3.net)

William, When it comes time I will send out posts and emails to all. I was hoping for a lot bigger response on the SWC so I can inform them that memberships are now ready. Please contact the chapter in your area so you will receive the notice.

Mike -
Just curious, I see you have plenty of info on Mike Childs, webmaster, but where's the information on Jim Serr, AJC President and founder?

Wouldn't it be easier to update things like events rather than redisigning something that already worked fine?
Just a thought.

Mike;
Appreciate your work!
How about making the sidebar smaller with a smaller version of the logo. You could superimpose the AJC verbage over a larger version of the logo on the main portion of the site.
Also I (my opinion) don't think the classifieds should be restricted to members only. I have bought and sold many parts to non Jeepster owners. Since much 4wd stuff is interchangable why restrict the "pool". The BBS is a different story. I think more info should be required before a person is allowed to post, but not necessarily restrict it to members only.
Opinions are like belly buttons - everybody has one.

I had the same problem with the logo in the left frame overlaying the menu, but when I resized the left side, it fixed it. My 19" monitor is set at 1024x768

I also agree with Chris about the word "ONLY" for members. What makes one of us a member,, and the next person NOT a member? Are you going to set up passwords or some other techno restriction ?

Joe

I'm not opposed to using the frames layout, except I generally don't like to have one window using the entire screen, or having to scroll left/right to see the right side frame. maybe the left side could be shrunk down in size.

Generally, I like being able to access the different parts of the site without having to back out to the main page then go back in. You did a great job. Maybe just a little tweeking to address the group's concerns.

Resolution? Does that mean a new computer or monitor?
Someone said something about resizing it, I had no idea how that could be done, thought it had something to do with the computer itself.

But -- now it doesn't superimpose any more on mine.

Went to the page, put the mouse on the vertical line separating the 2 sides, the cursor changes shape. Then I dragged the vertical line slightly to the left, Logo jumped up off the text, making it readable.
Now I can't find the spot where it was double imaging, not that I want to. I don't know if everyone's will fix that way, but mine worked.

But, the right side still has to be scrolled to the right to see the picture of the one on the ramp.
Is there another "adjustment?"

I'm sure you put alot of time ito this, but I also got an image similiar to others described. Layout just needs to be condensed.
What is the deal on memberships? When I tried to join, it came up as taking no new mwembers. Can't imagine why additional members would cause a problem if we are all paying dues. Any plans for change?
