im having a tough time deciding which brand stock size replacement speakers to get for my bronco along with a cd player.

i dont spend much time commuting anymore so i just want to replace the original , i know
6x8s in the rear and the cheapie 6.5" pioneers i bought for the doors 5 years ago. My blaupunct reciever dont pull in &*$# anymore so im finally gonna move up to a cd player.

Anyhow after checking around on ebay, it seems the pioneer TSA-6870R 6x8 220w max for the rear and the pioneer TS-G1645 6.5" 130w, for the price, have the best frequency range and max power handling, compared to alpines, jvc, etc.

for those experienced with stock size stereo speakers, are these pioneers worthwhile for a cd reciever of 50x4 watts such as a pioneer or sony explod???

thanks for any input, Craig...

As for the pioneer speakers, for the price they are good speakers. I prefer Sony Explod speakers, but really there's not a whole lot of difference in sound at that price range. Of course they do get better, but you'll pay a lot more for those (can't beat MB Quart coaxial's). But really I don't think you can go wrong here, as long as you don't buy wally-world cheapies (road gear, jensen, etc).

For the cd player, I would advise against a Sony head unit. I feel they are way over-priced for what they are. I've never heard a sony radio sound good. For a lower-priced higher-quality cd player, I'd say Pioneer. I also recommend Clarion, Alpine, and Kenwood for high quality, but most of those are more expensive. Another good cd player is Rockford Fosgate's line, but I've seen a lot of problems with them trying to play mp3's, other than that they are good units.

Of course, if you want your speakers to really come alive, add a 4-channel amplifier to the back of the radio. It will/can make the sound clearer, crisper, and better frequency response.

As for my own system, I use a Kenwood KDC-x659 cd player running Sirius satellite, with Lightning Audio 6.5's and 6x8's, and it sounds awesome. (Of course a cd player that costs that much ought to make any speakers sound great)

Those are good speakers but unless you plan on putting an amp on those speakers it's not worth it. the 50x4 won't be able to push it and it will sound like sh%t. You wouldn't even need a big amp-a small one will do the trick to get the full sound out of those speakers.

If you don't understand why, 50 trying to push 130 or 220 is similar to getting much bigger tires and not gearing for the increase.

Hope this helps.

Don't discount JVC head units, they're tough and sound good and we get them up here for pretty cheap. I've got one in the Bronco and two in different Mopars.

I'm never going back to full range speakers, now that I'm sold on component speakers, but having spent countless hours and dollars doing what you're doing I can relate.

The piece of adice I'd offer you about the rear speakers is as follows; Don't be afraid to make up two thin spacers/adaptors out of 1"X 8" to get you out to a real 6"X 9". They are much more plentiful and often cheaper than our stock sized rear speakers. Also they are a lot louder and clearer for any given amount of power fed into them.

I just noticed the plastic spacer ring on top of the 50 pack spools of CD-Rs is almost exactly the same size as out oil pan drain bolt washer. I'm going out to check ! (pays to be a music pirate!)

Thanks for the advice everyone, got a little concerned about the pioneers cuz i found so many used "customer returns" offered on ebay not that i planned on buying any out of the original box or without warranty, but theres still plenty of new ones offered at 1/2 what the local stores get.

a new online audio site, carstereoexpo.com in cal seems to have some good bargains also.

i`ll be lookin, thanks

Used to be pioneers were really excellent when it came to 6"X9" speakers. I used to buy the 4 way 200 watt 6X9s which were called 6907s, then 6970s,etc,etc. They could really crank.

I'm gonna try that website you gave us. Steve83 or somebody here got me hooked on e-tronics.com several years ago.

Pioneer is still good in their price range.

But like most of the items in the lower price ranges, the manufacturers are more focused on quantity so they can compete in those markets. Pioneer, like many others, have migrated this way.

A lot of the product is considered "disposeable", as it's more cost-effective to replace than repair since it is mass-produced.

Quality is definately not the same a manufacturers who are not after the mass-market.

I've had the same Pioneer with the organic graphics (dolphins, etc) and haven't had any problems whatsoever in the Cherokee when I had it or the Bronco. that thing is so cool just to watch it-dolphins swimming by or on another screen is pyramids, phoenix and some other stuff that rotates in a circle- can't look at for to long while driving b/c for "some weird" reason, the wheel turns in that direction. hahaha! As for speakers I'm stuck on Audiobahn's- highest RMS for the class and bang for the buck. Can't beat that.

I have Kenwood Speakers in my truck, because they make a 6x8 that handles 220watts and sounds like a dream that fell in love with. In the doors I have Kenwoods as well and I have mounted kenwood tweeters on either A-pillar. The tweeters filled in the sound quite nicely. For my deck I use a Pionner MP3 player, it has worked well for me overall. Before that I had a Clarion and prefered the overall quality of the Clarion to the Pionner, but it died so it was replaced. 2 10" JL subs with 800 peak watts also fill the cab nicely.

Wow, it sounds like I got more than one friend here that shares my enthusiasm on car audio. Does anyone else compete with their broncos (in car audio, i mean)?

Hey Norm, that sounds like a pretty good idea to me. Not for me though, I personally wouldn't like the looks of mine topless. Anyway, Kicker makes some good marine speakers and cd players, if I remember right.

no real competitions, but at different audio stores, they will have mini competitions- mainly imports and "don't want to waste their time" on trucks unless it's got bling or poser 4by with spinners, blah blah. It was pretty funny when I had my system wide open and knocked crap off their shelves inside and set off every car alarm in the parking lot. check my sig line on the profile.

I don't compete with my amps and 8 component speakers, but I am going deaf because of them and nobody I know has a system as loud and as clear as mine, especially nobody my age.

I can't attend competitions as I get this overwhelming urge to put it in low lock and park on those Hondas!

They look so good flat !

Just bought the Soundblaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum internal tower sound card today to help move more of my prehistoric rock collection off LP and onto CD for the truck. Almost 1000 albums done or copied off CDs to date !

I can understand the feeling of all the ricers, but that's one of the places I get the most respect for my truck. When I can have a vehicle built up for some extreme offroading that has that much internal volume and still be able to hang with the compacts, its a good feeling. 'Course, since my lay off I haven't been able to upgrade my stuff to keep up as much, but I'm currently building a new set of boxes that will hopefully put me ahead of the pace. At least I don't have to worry about whether or not some enclosures will fit, it makes it easier.

This year, you'll have to watch for team A.I.T.I. in the db drags. Me and my buddy are thinking of going national. I feel we ought to be able to do well this year. Hopefully it won't make me deaf (or more deaf
)

I don't drive a bronco, i drive an F150, i've got a pioneer head unit 50x4, 2 6 1/2" blaupunkt speakers in the doors and two other blaupunkt speakers in the rear corners (one size down from 6x9) I also had a 10" Phoenix Gold Sub behind the seat running off a 250 watt (can't think of the name)amp. I pulled beside a buddy of mine in a ranger one day and cranked it right up, turned it down and pulled away, as soon as i pulled out of the parking lot the sub quit for some reason. I took it out of the box and there was no evidence of it burning out. I'm still getting power out of my amp as well. Could it be the plugs going into the sub (banna plugs and i'm hoping you guys have heard of them before). I'm not sure if maybe they got bent or screwed up or something behind my seat cause the box just fits behind my seat. I've also got a 700 watt 2 channel boss amp which i would eventually like to hook up to a second 10" sub (or if i save up enough sheckles a couple 12" flat subs). any advice about why my sub quit working would be great.

How do you have the gain set on the amp. The reason I ask is because a lot of people just think of it as a volume knob, which it kinda is, but not completely. Some amps will let you turn up the gain so far that it will start clipping (square sine wave instead of a smooth curve, sounds like distortion), that is one of the biggest reasons that people blow subwoofers. How you want to set the amp is turn the radio up as loud as you'll ever want it, then turn the gain up until you hear the distortion, then turn it back down until it disappears.

Another problem is you have to make sure that the amp can run stable at the resistance you have the sub hooked up at. Since you only have one sub hooked up to one amp, I don't think this is your problem. If that sub has dual voice coils that are both 2-ohm, and you have them bridged, the effective resistance would be 1-ohm and there are only a few amps that could handle that. So, if this is the case you could have fried something in the amp very easily.

Another possibility is that everything was hooked up right, but the amp just had a flaw in it and burned up a diode or something.

Now with that being said, since you say that you didn't observe any signs of burning or blowing the sub, I would see if you could get it tested on another amp. It is very likely that it is just the connections.

I hope this helps!

Just asking, how much space from speaker to seat to you have? I hope more than your speaker flexes. I don't know for sure but does anyone make a 1ohm stable amp at just 250 watts? I'm not aware but if anyone else knows let me know. I just know that the "smallest" 1ohm amp Audiobahn makes is a 1200, personally, I don't like the other brands not enough RMS for the moula($).

Personally, I have roughly a foot between the front of my box and my seat. Its enough room to mount my amps, cap, and x-over. Of course, I'm not sure how my arrangment's gonna change once I get done building my new boxes.

I don't know of any 1-ohm stable smaller amp. You might check out kicker and rockford fosgate. For a while now, kicker has had some 1-ohm stable amps, but I don't keep up with them enough to know how small they go. This year Rockford came out with some new 1-ohm stable amps, but again I don't know how small they go.

Hey if you want, I'm currently selling a couple of amps that should have enough RMS to keep you happy. They aren't rated at 1-ohm, but plenty of people have run them that way without any problems. They're 2003 model Rockford Fosgate 1501bd amps that have been barely used (note: they aren't the ones I'm running, I got em at a good price and couldn't resist). Mine were all tested above 1600wRMS @14v. I'm asking $475 each, obo.

Well guys as you can tell im light years behind in audio technology but im just basically looking for something that sounds better than my 17 year old ford premium dual cones and at least as good as my wifes stock mazda stereo system.

Heck , for you west coast home audio enthusiasts, im still running a pair of ESS heil air suspension towers back from 1975!

ess is still making them though...

Anyways, i have got my speakers already pioneer TS-A6870R 6x8s & TS-G1647s so far i have only had time to install the rear 6x8s but they seem to have less bass than the old originals

could it be that my blaupunkt sterio only has 15x4 watts and not enough power to drive them or is it the polarity is not right?
The original wires back there are not color coded the same on both sides, all four wires are different and nothing is marked + or -

I plan on mounting the front speakers saturday and verify the polarity of the color coded wires behind the radio , i plan on getting a pioneer mosfet 50X4w cd/xm ready head unit soon , but is the weak blaupunkt the reason for dissapointing bass in the new 6x8s?
