Well I'm normally a toyota guy but every so often I run across an old rig I think I might like to fix up. This time is an 1987 Jeep Comanche 4.0 automatic. Here is the general condition of the truck.

Scale from 1 to 10 with 1 being the worst and 10 being the best.

Body:
All the glass is intact and have no cracks, chips, fade, haze. All doors open and close solid.
Paint is some sorta black color but looks sorta brownish? Its faded and there are small dents here and there. I say it wouldnt take more then a couple weekends to puddy out the dents and paint them. The bed tailgate is beat up and rusted in a few small areas where it appears to have metal damage and then the rust set in. It would be repairable or just replace the tailgate (if I can find one cheap) and call it a day. The front of the bed behind the unibody cab is dented in towards the cab as if something slide forward in an emergency stop and dented the center of the bed wall. I think I can just comalong it straight and then do what ever needs to be done to cover it and look ok. There used to be a rollbar in the bed. I can tell it was a four pointer because they torched the bar out and left some burns in the bed and tire wells. The front grill has been removed as have the front bumper, lamps, etc.. so it only have hood and fenders which are ruff. I give the exterior a 5 but over a few short weekends I can raise that number to maybe 7 or 8. I would need to find a grill and everything for the nose at affordable prices. So the way it sits it isnt to much of an eye sore.

Interior:
Well the interior isnt to hammered. The headliner is hanging some and the seats are worn and the lower valance for the dash is hanging down because I guess someone needed some parts from under the dash. Not sure what yet or maybe they just wanted the radio as it is gone. Carpet is toast. Floors appear to have been patched in a few areas due to rust but I coundnt tell if they replaced the floors or if thats what they are suppose to look like. I crawled under the rig to and inspected it and it looks good if they did patch it up. The doors hang ok and I noticed the hinges that contect to the cab are spot welded in place? Is it suppose to be that way? I give the interior a 3.5... Has that look as if it where a work truck and maybe a school truck for high school.

Mechanics:
The 4.0 is toast. He didnt know if it ran or not but he said it was toast and I noticed stuff missing off the engine. also he didnt know if the transmission worked but he said it most likely did being the motor stopped running. I wont be using the engine or this transmission anyway so not a big deal. The rear brakes are drums.. I dont know if jeep offered rear disc brakes for these years or not... the front disc look ok but i didnt see the pads... the rotors appear to be ok though.. the subframe doesnt look damaged or rotted. i beat it prodded around to see if it had any cancer.... leaking oil in various places on both axles and else where. pretty normal i take it for the age... not sure if i would invest money in rebuilding the axles or buy better ones. (?) Nor do I know what the average cost is. I can rebuild a land cruiser front axle with everything for about 150 bucks. would expect it to be about the same for this jeep but then again maybe its not as much money. This one has the five spoked jeep rims... i think they are the five spoked ones... but they are the nice looking stock ones and not steelies... altough offroad i would rather have heavy metal rims... hate it when i bend a rim or bust an alloy rim on rocks and you dont have the spare in the rig... although i have beat the metal lip back in place enough to seal the bead and hold air.

Well thats pretty much a book in its self.... the truck needs some serious work mechanically and some not so seriously body and interior work. the guy wants 500 bucks for the rig.... im thinkin maybe 200 bucks but he wont budge from the 500. i dont need this truck but it would be nice to have a jeep truck with old man emu and some of the other mods i would like to do..... anyway let me know what you guys think... i dont know how popular the comanches where or if they sold vary many of them... maybe its worth what he is asking... or being it isnt worth 50 bucks....
Anyway let me know what you guys think cause I would like to get this to the house if its worth getting....

you left out if it was shortbed or long. I recently purchased a 88 comanche (mj) shortbed for 500 which i thought was a decent price cause of how rare shortbeds are, mine has the 4.0 which ran but smoked A LOT and the auto and pretty much the shape yours is in except for very little missing parts, i could probably find a couple of longbeds for cheaper than that but thats not what i wanted

Doesn't sound like very good deal to me. But I guess it depends what you are going to do with it. It needs lots of body work, the interior is shot, it's missing parts, everything leaks on it, and it doesn't run. I wouldn't buy it, unless you are a really big fan of those trucks. You can get a rig in a lot better shape than that for $500.

I think this is the short bed as the bed doesnt resemble what i know most auto makers use as long beds. I think the bed might have been 5 or 6 feet long? it didnt seem that long to me.... but i looks like other comanches ive seen. how rare are short beds?

I dont know exactly how many of them was made but usually the owners that have them do not want to part with them, and if you do happen to find one for sale its usually sitting at a salvage yard or a private seller is selling it because it doesnt run. without looking real hard it took me about a year or more to find one around this price

and my bed is a little over 6' long
