My rear gears have started to whine quite loud. What would cause this? It ia a D35 (135km) in a 91 YJ 4cyl w/lockright.The lock right has only been in since fall. I have never screwed around with the gears to mess up the pattern. I will be taking it apart tomorrow, so any suggestions at what to look for would help. Oh yeah it only makes noise when you are on the gas.

To check if you're pinion gear is still centered on your sun gear, put some grease on your sun gear (enough to completely cover several teeth) and twist the driveshaft back and forth a few times so that the pinion gear leaves a pattern in the grease. Check out the pattern and see it it is centered perfectly on the sun gear.

Just a Thought.. How are the u-Joints??? I had the Front (double Cardan) u-joint on my rear driveshaft die, and i Swore up and down it was a Gear problem. Wouldn't have even found it if i hadn't pulled the driveshaft, to pull the pinion gear.....Ohhh well

Also, how about bearings???

just a couple of thoughts
Good Luck

From what you describe my first guess would be pinion bearings. If the noise is high pitched and most noticeable at lower speeds ( like around 25 mph) when accelerating it is usually the pinion bearings. If you had just put in your gears I'd say the preload was off, but as it is I'd almost certainly say pinion bearings are worn.
