Don't puff that chest out too far...

They already won't rent to the softtop (possibly entire SWB series) crowd period and cite the XJ/WJ models as "under sized" for anything but the small utility trailers (despite the inflated tow rating from D-C)...at least here in the Carolinas.

you know i wonder if it also has to do with the rear IRS that the new exploeres have. I wonder if they are worried bout it causing problems for towing. But i do not know the caracteristics of IRS on a vehicle especially while towing. could be good that the demise of solid axles will not happen.

Last time I needed a trailer, they rented it to me here in S.C. with my soft top CJ7. And that was for a trip to Florida, one way. It was only one of the 5x8 enclosed trailers. Of course that was 5 years ago or so.

Probably not related to the IRS as much as the exposure to litigation from the whole Firestone situation. Here is a section of the article from USAToday. I have an 03 explorere for the wire and kids and it is great (I like my CJ better though!!).

"Fried said the rental ban applies to all model years, even though Explorer was redesigned in 2002 — the same year the SUV improved its NHTSA rollover rating from two stars to three, and was voted "tow vehicle of the year" by Trailer Boats magazine."

I have owned two Explorers in the past. I blew a tire in one of them(at high speed) and did not know what happened until it started slightly pulling to the right. The problem is the Explorer is soo much better than it's competition that it out sells them by orders of magnitude. The competition simply does not have enough vehicles on the road to have these trivial problems.

BTW - the Firestone tires I had on my explorers were the best tires I had. I got brand bew Goodyear tires for free when the Firestone issue went down. The worn Firestones had a better ride. Firestone got a bad rap!!!!

We have a 97, and I do not know what all the hubub is about, I have only had a few minor problems with mine, and I pull a 16 foot trailer with my TJ on it when we travel any distance to wheel. I added some air bags to the rear leafs and that helps the ride while loaded.. I lean twards the fact that there are a ton of them out there and who the majority of them are sold to. I have a tendency to over maintence my vehicles maybee that is why I have no problems..

As for the firestone tires,, I got me a good set of BFG at's and only paid about 100.00 more than the recall sent me for them but I actualy liked the ride of the firestones better. Glad I kept them..

Lastly I have pulled several uhaul trailers in the past with varing vehicles and have never found one that would pull down the road straight.. They all pull left and right,,, I would only rent one if I was down and out,,, Course now I wouldn't rent one at all

Well, if you have anything other than a "wrangler" you are ok.

It said that other than the Exploder the only other one is a soft top jeep wrangler.

Kinda like this girls mom I dated (I dated the girl). She would not let her daughter ride in my CJ WITHOUT the soft top on, for safety reasond (shaking my head in fustration)

Did anyone miss the last paragraph???

"The only other vehicle similarly banned from U-Haul trailer rentals is soft-top Jeep Wranglers, which the company believes pose a safety risk, she said"

So any of us that own Wranglers will need the Hard Top.

Hmmm...only soft top WRANGLERS are banned from U-haul...then my CJ is just fine! LOL!

I own a '99 Explorer (wife's rig now that we finally got rid of that [email protected] plymouth)but haven't tried to tow anything yet. I guess I'll need to use my '95 Ranger if I want to tow a u-haul trailer. It's funny...the Explorer is based on the Ranger and they aren't banning that! LOL!
