I am in the process of designing plans for a Bumper/Tire Carrier/Cargo Rack for my '82 CJ-7. I am going to use 3"X5" 3/16 box tube for the bumper. I am going to use 2"X2" 3/16 box tube for the Tire Carrier, and I am going to use 1"X1" 3/16 box tube for the cargo rack. My main question is about what to use for the pivot point. I would like to use some sort of bearings at the pivot point. Any suggestions on this would be great. I would also like some input on what to use for a latch when the tire carrier is closed. I am also planning accomodations for 2 Jerry Cans for gas on the trails. My question about this is what should the measurements be for the platform that these will sit on. I guess I need to know the dimensions of a Jerry Can so that I can plan accordingly. Thanks in advance.

I just used 2 plates, top and bottom, sandwiching the swing-out portion, and drilled holes and put a grade 8, 1/2" bolt thru it. The plates prevent any sag, and it works great. I put some antiseize between the plates and the swing-out, and it swings sweet. For the latch, I used 2 more plates, top and bottom, took a grade 5 bolt, filed a flat on it, drilled a hole in the end for a hitch pin clip, and slide the bolt thru the plates and the swing-out, and push the lock pin thru, similar to a hitch. It's a little difficult to explain, but it's really simple. I should have some pics scanned in soon.

good luck
Pete

Try the following link for a nice writeup and diagrams on a nice bumper/tire carrier combo.

Go to the jeep section and then look for the bumper section. The clamp is a Detasco 344 which you can get from several sources over the internet.

Good luck

/wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif You know, Mav,....I have a nice welder, a good shop, and can build anything I want for a bumper, but after thinking it over, I decided to buy the dual Jeep can and spare tire rack outa JCWhitney Jeep catalog, and combine it with some home grown stuff to get what I wanted. Rather than worry about making the hinge strong and overhanging ten miles with all the weight, I am using two risers of 2" X 2" X 3/16" square tube which weld into my square tube bumper and rise up just outside the tail gate edges, EXACTLY where the JCW rack can hook to them. The JCW rack is designed to bolt to the CJ body, but we all know why we don't DO that, so the two risers support the JCW rack independent of the body. That was an easy way to do it, and the risers will take a trail rack later if I want. I compared the cost of the Jeep can bases, the tire mount, something for a hinge, the material and bending, and it wasn't all that far off, so we got real /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gifcrazy and actually bought something instead of fabbing it up. I am also making a tire-only rack to interchange so we dont have the cans on unless we want them. Here in the **** state(CA) thievery is rampant./wwwthreads_images/icons/frown.gif
