I am looking at a new CB for Christmas and need some advice on what to get. I need to find out soon so I can tell my wife what to buy. Thanks

get the cobra 75WXST.
It is small, great for trails, and easily hidden from prying eyes.

Alittle better than stock.
And now with a future Jeeper on the way.

Cobra and Uniden are pretty good. Believe it or not you can probably get a better deal at a large truck stop on CBs rather than the electronic discount stores, and the truck stops generally have a larger selection too. You can also get good deals on reconditioned Cobras from their web site.
Personally I like the Cobra 29 LTD. It's a big radio, solidly built. Also like the weather bands. Almost anywhere you go is close enough to a weather broadcasting station so that if there are weather related concerns, you can tune in for quick info.
Don't expect ranges of over 2 or 3 miles from any radio. Sometimes when conditions are perfect you can talk several miles, but for the most part expect to use the radio for short distances only.

Another place which carries Uniden and Cobra is http://www.bills2way.com. They have some reconditioned units there as well.

One the comment about the range of 2 to 3 miles. This is with a bone stock CB and good ant.. CBs are like a good engine,
you can get ALOT more power out of them with the proper tuning.

Also try scanner world, and copper electronics. I believe both have web sites.

Personally, I would not get a CB anywhere other than at a yard sale, or a flea market. They're easy to test on any available car battery, nobody uses 'em much anymore, so they are pretty available, and if someone takes it, you're out a lot less coin.

Good luck

my favorite to this day is the Uniden HR2510. if you are real serious about your radios, this one is tough to beat. if you dont want to spend 3-400 dollars for some communication equipment, go with the Uniden pro520. good price, very easy to use and pump up a little. either of these radios work the best with an Astatic D104M6B(or c if you like crome) mic.

also, no matter what radio you buy get the best antenna and coax you can find. my preference is the Wilson 5000. no matter how good your radio is, it is no better than the rest of the parts you transmit through. and have it tuned.

True, but then you have to find someone else that has tweeked their radio before you can talk back and forth. Seems to me like (and I might be wrong) that when CBs first got popular, there wasn't really any other long distance communicating device except more heavily licensed and expensive radios, ham, and telephones. So folks turned their CBs into something they weren't designed for in the first place. Sound familar? Jeeps with D60s? 40" tires??? Anyway, CBs were assigned to radio frequencies that really do not lend themselves to long distance communication regardless of the power. They were designed for Citizens to communicate around the neighborhood, in the woods, car to car for short distances etc. The frequencies used were not much good for any serious communications anyway because they are affected too much by atmospheric conditions and things in the way like buildings, trees, mountains and big rocks.
Now with other communications devices available, cell phones, 2 meter band, more easily obtained ham license, internet etc., the lowly CB has kinda gotten back to where it was designed to be in the first place - short distance, cheap, little regulation, and works great on the trail ---- most of the time ------ well, almost "most of the time."
