I just purchased a 1998 chevy tracker but it needs an engine.

it has the 1.6L 16valve.

There's a few on ebay from JDM, but it says they're for the 92-95 trackers.... but its a 1.6L 16valve, didn't the earlier onces have 8valve?

well here's a listing
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/JDM-92-95...002063428QQrdZ1

Think it'll work?

It should work just fine, and that is a great price..I didn't look at the shipping price..

you will need to use the wiring from your current engine, and some things from your current engine.

Your setup in the 98 tracker is OBD2 and the one that is in the picture is OBD1. the cross over air intake is a bit different. It doesn't have a pre heater. My 92 has a hose that goes into it to pre-heat the housing, I guess for warming any cold air.

otherwise it is a nice looking engine.

might want to find out how many miles are on it.

what is your old engine doing?

the current engine threw a bearing. it runs great but knocks like hell.

so if i purchased this engine, i'd have everything needed?

the obd1 to obd2 thing just means that ill swap the sensors from the current engine over to the new one right? im just worried that certain ports won't be there...

btw: do you know anyone with a similar year tracker that i can have take pictures of the back door and how the back window mounts? when me door is closed theres nothing to kep the window from flopping around- i think its missing a brace

Hey, I am having another thought, when i was working with my 1999 Esteem swap into my samurai, I had to fill a hole that is down in the oil pan/front part of the engine where the timing belt is.

Does your 1998 have a sensor that is mounted at the bottom of the block that is situated to see the bottom of the timing belt?

you can tell if the oil pan curves inward at the end, it would curve around the sensor allowing you to get access to the sensor from the front.

If you have this sensor, you WILL NOT be able to swap your engine with the one you posted......

if it doesn't have that sensor, then no problem for the swap.

a link from autozone's manual for a 98tracker/sidekick might help you

autozone 98 tracker

the attached picture shows the location of the sensor I am talking about, again if it is not there on your current engine, then this engine from ebay should work fine.

No, sorry can't help there, however, if you look at the link I posted for the autozone manual it may have the mounting stuff you need on it.

as for not having the port where you need it, not a problem unless it is what I just posted about.

I just took an Esteem motor and put all my stuff on it from the sidekick so it would be mounted front to back instead of side to side.

I just used all the stuff from my old motor.

you would not have to do hardly any changes except if your current motor has that bottom mounted sensor, then you would not be able to use the new motor you are looking at.

good luck

the sensor I am talking about is part of the block, but this was from a 1999 esteem engine.

to make the block and head work for my older OBD1 setup, I had to JBweld the hole shut so I wouldn't have a direct path into my oil pan.

If you choose to get an Esteem engine, you will have to swap the cams so you can use the distributor from your old engine, and you will need to swap the oil pans, mounts, exaust, intakes, water hookups, pretty much everything exterior to the block and head. but you get a nice block and head.. it is another option.

Re: Need 1.6L 16valve engine info: in diar need of

well.. here's the deal with the tracker..

my girlfriend has a 96 range rover. 1 more year left of school. only works saturdays. i just graduated and started my career. I bought this tracker for her knowing it needed an engine- but it was only $800 and other than the knocking its in awesome shape. front ends tight, brakes are good, tranny shifts smooth, interiors clean, etc.

so im going to put an engine in it and let her use it to get back and forth from school. then next may when she graduates- its going to turn into my offroad toy--- and thats when ill look into swaps & such. for the time being i just want to get it to a dependable DD status

The swap I am suggesting is the Same exact block and head you have in your current tracker. but just another option if you can't find a in-expensive sidekick/tracker 16valve engine.

I picked up an Esteem engine with 8k miles on it, for $425, but had to swap all the exterior stuff. now it is a sidekick 16valve engine and not an Esteem engine.

Re: Need 1.6L 16valve engine info: in diar need of

oh i see. what year esteem should i be looking at for this?

considering everything runs perfect- its just a bearing issue, then all id need is the block and heads.

so if i DO have the sensor u were speeking of before, the ebay listing wont work- but an esteem engine will work.... is that right?

Re: Need 1.6L 16valve engine info: in diar need of

Yes, or a same year sidekick/tracker 16valve engine will work.

with the Esteem engine, you will need the cam shaft out of your tracker engine, as well as all the exterior stuff from your sidekick engine..

it takes a bit of time swapping the exterior stuff over. most of the time is switching the cams and setting up the distributor off your old engine.

but check for the sensor, if it is not there, save yourself the time and get the engine from Ebay.. again check how many miles are on it.

i am going to sleep as of now, good night and good luck. tomorrow night I will check up on this posting and help where I can..

If NJ has the OBD2 emissions testing, the one where they plug into your PCM, you have to use the same year or newer motor. If you don't it will fail the test.

Nope not exactly correct...

the deal is true with what Rich says... the big difference is ONLY the sensors... otherwise the 16valve longblocks are purdy much the same (ya, some slight differences in the manifolds etc) but basically the same. If you just utilize the LB and swap everything else over there shouldn't be any smog issues. Shucks I even changed over an OBDII to an OBDI cuz the Kali smog laws are soo nazi... toughest in the states Bro' and mine has passed twice now! YEHAW
