National \"Gas Out\"

Let me hear what you think. I received this email from a friend after the great trucker's protest up here at Capitol Hill. (500 big rigs converging on DC was truly an awsome sight - maybe 1000 Jeeps on Capitol Hill will get some attention too!)

*************

Last year on April 30,1999, a gas out was staged across Canada and
the U.S. to bring the price of gas down, and it worked. It's time to
do something about it again.

This time, lets make it for three days instead of just one. The oil
cartel decided to slow production to drive up gasoline prices. Lets
see how many Canadian\American people we can get to ban together for
a three day period in April, NOT TO BUY ANY GASOLINE, during those
three days. LETS HAVE A GAS OUT.

Do not buy any gasoline from APRIL 7, 2000, THROUGH APRIL 9, 2000.

Buy what you need before the dates listed above, or after, but try
not to buy any during the GAS OUT. If you want to help, just send
this to everyone you know and ask them to do the same.

We brought the prices down once before, and we can do it again!
Come on North America lets stand together.

WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

I spent a lot of years in the trucking industry (in my first career). There have been many times over the years that truckers tried to converge on Washington, or tried to block some major highway, or get attention in some way. If it wasn't over fuel prices, it was over the rates they were allowed to charge to haul freight and make a buck. That IS the point. Call attention to the situation. Get the politicians off their a$$ and do their jobs.....instead of politicking as usual. I read in the paper the other day that the Michigan D.O.T. approved some 10 million dollars of my taxes to widen a few mile section of U.S. 12 so the race fans, from out of state, that don't pay any state taxes, don't have to wait in line to get out of Michigan Speedway 3 weekends a year. I travel the other direction on U.S. 12 every day and get to sit in bumper to bumper traffic (with a lot of other tax payers) on an equally long stretch of 2-lane road.

Isn't that a great use of our .35 cents a gallon in taxes?

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

While the problem is definitely multi-faceted and complicated and involves everything from OPEC production to the US tax system burdening what's left of our producers, there is an option, that's been around forever, that you're beloved tree-hugging freaks keep from happening because they're worried about elk migration.

we need to open ANWR on the North Slope.

When we bitch about oil prices and gas taxes and OPEC countries shutting us out, etc, bitch also about keeping the US in the game - and the US would be in the game for a good long while if we'd just open the slope. I've been there, I've seen the plans, I've heard the arguments, and it's ridiculous that we're keeping it closed.

I hate to say it, but if we're going to continue to be a society that prefers driving suv's over smaller cars - or hell, for that matter, just prefers driving at all- we have to be responsible enough to know that keeping American driving and keeping America "pristine and open" are not necessarily mutally exclusive.

the oil is there, the companies have plans to get at it and get at it cleanly- tell Washington to go and open it up.

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

Wow! You can post that again! I'm telling you folks - if we ALL vote and ALL frequently write our elected officials we WILL make an impact. Just look at what the left has done in 20yrs!

Growing up in Wyoming I saw more oil wells than you could shake a stick at. It never occured to me it was an eyesore, or that the land was not "pristine and open." The greatest problem with the wells being there was that they limited our shooting lanes at the migrating elk!

Off the subject somewhat, but . . .
I just talked to a tree hugger this weekend at an outdoor shop in Bethesda, MD that is ready to jump ship. (For those of you who don't know, Bethesda is just outside of DC proper and crawling with tree huggers that will glare at any flannel and realtree clad Marine in his beat up-jacked up-excessively muddy CJ7. /wwwthreads_images/icons/crazy.gif The only thing more fun is taking a leisurely drive down embassy row in DC {the nationals love it} or cruising through Chevy Chase, MD {the really rich tree huggers hate the way it looks in their town} with it!) Anyway, while this tree hugger still admits being a liberal and will probably still vote democrat in the next election, all of these organizations he has supported with $$$ for years just got a small chunk of land (a few hundred acres) TOTALLY off limits up here in the NE where he used to use to hike, camp, and hug his trees!!! Now he even admits they are going to far and demands that they be stopped!!! Wait till they ALL have to pay the piper!!! /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gifROTFLMAO!!!!!/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif He even hooked me up with some Jeep trails in western VA for my camping trip next week and asked me to join ACCESS and the BRC to help keep them open! /wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gifROTFLMAO some more!!!!!/wwwthreads_images/icons/laugh.gif

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

Alright, I hate raining on someone's parade, but this topic has been bugging for a few days, and I finally figured out why...the way you propose this gas out, ISN'T going to do anything. If we ALL bought gas, in the days before April 7th, than that would defeat the purpose, you know? What we need to do, is convince people to ride a bike to work(yes I know, for 90% of you this isn't even remotely possible) or to avoid purchasing gas for a week or two, and not buy any before or after, just use up what you have, and never look back for a little while. This may sound extreme, but picketing gas stations, convincing other people that these prices are ridiculous would do a LOT more damage, than just not buying gas on certain days. NOT to put down your idea, don't worry, I'm not going to buy gas those days, I'm just saying, what if we did somethign else instead?.....

Looks like I'll have to drive to good old Nissan on those days. The Jeep won't go that long without a drink./wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif
B.
FYI: Amoco 93 octane is $1.70/ga. and rising daily in Baltimore. I remember bitching about it costing $1.19/ga. and I'm only 24.

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

This is a lousy idea. Gas is still cheap. If someone told you 20 years ago that you would be paying the current price in 2000, you would have thought it was wonderful. Focus your efforts to lobby for relaxed restrictions on domestic oil exploration and production. O&G companies were pushed to the brink last year with the low prices.

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

Gas is still relatively cheap. It's just that recently it's been even cheaper and the change was quite drastic! Reg. Unleaded is $1.65 here and I live in one of the major ports in the south! Premium is closer to $1.80 and the gas station guy told me this morning he's raising it again on Thursday. Says it's over $2.00 for reg. unl. in parts of CA. WOW!

It'd be alot lower but for the taxes we are paying now on gasoline. We need fuel cells! Make gas out of water? That's the best idea I've ever heard of!

I don't know, though, EVERYONE would have to participate in the gas out for it to work.

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

Fuel from water, OF COURSE! Water is H2O, or two parts hydrogen, which burns, and one part oxygen, which is needed to sustain combustion. Ergo, water must burn, right guys? /wwwthreads_images/icons/wink.gif

Re: National \"Gas Out\"

Timex -

I agree in part, but . . .

What about using a combination of the two. "Activism" /wwwthreads_images/icons/shocked.gif is taboo on the right, but is nearing a "science" on the left. Why don't we try to use every means possible (without breaking the law of course, and by promoting the TRUTH!)in our efforts to make a change in our nation? The left is still kicking our butts in this area. Let's take back the political machine!

Thanks again Timex for bringing the issue up of getting up, getting out, and pushing the political machine to it's limits like we do our own machines on the trail. Many of you have said in reference to everything from gas prices to ORV restrictions to gun control, (to paraphrase) "I tired as hell and I am not going to take it any more!" - YET YOU STILL DON'T A THING ABOUT IT!!!
