Well I hope this is the begining and the end of my misfortune. I had the wife and kids in the old bronco and it was a nice day so decided to screw around alittle and this is what happened

So I guess the spare 8.8 open diff will be going in until I get the money to regear the 9in with 4.11 and a locker. I think maybe I messed something up when I put the rock gaurd on or there was always just a weak spot and I finnaly discovered it.

the axle is complete, but the housing needs work, which is why i was gonna just part it out. I edited the link above to include pics of the shafts.
The passenger shaft needs a new axle retaining plate, but you could take one off of yours to make it work. The housing needs a backing plate for the passenger side brakes, and it needs a shock mount either welded or replaced. If you want it, it yours, otherwise im just gonna scrap it

That sounds like a pretty good theory there Juice. Did the skid plate come with new longer bolts, or did you have to reuse the old ones? (If so, then maybe they ended up being too short?)

Tony, me and Steve will be heading your way Sunday, (leaving) around 9am. Ill bring everything i have for the 9", and you can take whatever parts you want.

Re: before and after

I had suggested to 80B that the skid may have been the culprit. I don't know much about the 9", but if those front bolts used by the skid also hold the pinion in there, then I would think this skid is a no no.

It is not the same thing as the protection we had been discussing for the 8.8 rear cover. You hit that type of protection, if designed proper, nothing should happen. Worst case scenario would probably end up being fluid loss.

It is hard to see that one pic 80B, which is why it is hard to conclude anything. Is this the same skid WD-40 is using?

Re: before and after

Wow! Major carnage. I'm back. Broken hand and all.......but that's another story.
Sheesh, 80Bronco, that's horrid!
Did you hit something hard?
I've slid mine over a few "obstacles" now and then, and never a problem.
You did have the correct torque specs, didn't you?
Man, I can't believe how bad that expoded.

Could have broken the pinion carrier bearing casting, and that caused the rest to go.
Get some pics of the 3rd member and pinion once it's out.

Re: before and after

Copy that will do on the pics once its out. I didnt hit anything just a little hole shot at 3000 rpm or so on dirty and the tires just wouldnt spin and the diff gave out I think maybe the bolt worked loose after the install. What are the torque specs on the front bolts.

Re: before and after

Without the shop manual on hand....
(IOW, estimates)
3rd member nuts - 15-20lbs-ft
Pinion carrier bolts - 40-45lbs-ft.
I used lock washers on all the fasteners that went through the skid plate.
I also re-torqued the other 2 bolts on the pinion carrier that aren't used for the skid plate.
Basically, to ensure they were all on at the same torque value.

I'm still thinkin' something went totally wrong in that diff.
I was tachin' at 6,000 in low range up a mega steep mega icy hill on our last snow run, and certainly didn't have the mayhem you did.
Man, I'm hurtin' for ya.
Looks like the skid needs some work to use again as well.

Re: before and after

Yeah it will need a few minutes with the mighty sledge before it will fit again. I am still tring to decided if I am going to reuse it or not I am kind of scared of it now. I have the same kinds of thoughts that juice has
hate for it to be a big waste of money on that diff guard but then again I dont want to have to replace the rear diff again until I am ready to regear
