This turned out to be a great swap for me. Better and tighter steering from my jeep using a Caddy steering box. 100% bolt on for my 79 too! Later years use different hoses, flare on mine and o-ring type on later models. This box has the bigger piston I believe like the high $$$ AGR box. Got my rebuilt box from O'Rileys for $125 and it comes with a lifetime guarantee. I said 100% but I just remembered I had to grind off a little tit on the end of the steering shaft coming out of the box, no biggie. The doner turned out to be a 1976 Cadillac Coupe Deville (sp?) you know, the big boys they used to build. This is a new one on me and I just thought I would pass it along. I wish I could take credit for it but a friend of mine came up with this one looking around a junkyard and spotting an old caddy sitting in the corner. Looked like it would work so he bought it. He swapped the hoses on his 85 and bolted it on. He told me he would show me how to beef up the pump but didn't think I would need to. I kinda like having a AMC, Ford, Chevy, Scout and now Cadillac jeep!!!

Ok GREAT! So the steering box from 76 Cadillac Coupe Deville bolted in and used the Caddy hoses to go to the PS pump and return line cleanly to your buddies 85.....CJ? Did I understand you correctly?

85 CJ8 Undergoing Frame-up Modifications w/4.0 standing by for transplant w/T176/Dana300 - Lookin for aluminum or chrome 15x8 spoke wheels to fit CJ.

Duane, I don't think the caddy hoses will work. Most people here don't understand that the st. box is just a saginaw. Gm used it for years on almost every car they made. Not every one will work, but 99% will. Just don't use the truck ones as they bolt to the outside of the frame.

The stock hoses on my 79 bolted right up, no need to change anything. If you have a later model CJ you need to change the fittings or the hoses from o-ring to the older (better) flare type.

I too had great luck using the Saginaw box from a GM(Impala or Caprice).Got the box and pump from the boneyard for 40 or 50 bucks(that was about a year ago)....box bolted right to my 78CJ5 frame....I had to make 1 bracket to fit the pump to the 258....even got lucky with the belt(same as jeep used)....works great!!!

The 87 camaro box will bolt on too uses O-ring fittings, like our 8's. If you get the one w/ ths sport suspension (IROC) then you get a variable ratio box. The standard supension box is about 1 turn quicker than the stock CJ box and Autozone stocks it.

The only thing you have to be careful of with the Camaro box it that it uses a different spline on the input shaft, but borgeson can take care of that. =)

I also talke to an engineer at ATSCo's tech center (they reman the steering boxes for Autozone). He told me that would build a custom box for me that I could order through Autozone.
